Job description

Research Scientist - Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials
Job no: 529451
Work type: Non-Tenure-Track Faculty
Location: Main Campus (Gainesville, FL)
Categories: Physical/Mathematical Sciences
Department:16360100 - LS-PHYSICS-GENERAL
Classification Title:
Research Scientist
Job Description:
A Research Scientist position is available in the Center for Molecular Magnetic Quantum Materials (M2QM) at the University of Florida. See https://efrc.ufl.edu/. M2QM is a renewed (Aug. 1, 2022) Energy Frontier Research Center funded by the US Department of Energy; See https://science.osti.gov/-/media/bes/pdf/awards/EFRC-awards-sheet-8-25.pdf
The Center focuses on the science of molecule-based magnetic systems as the basis for their application in next-generation quantum technologies. The Center programs ranges from the synthesis and characterization of these emergent new materials to a systematic computational understanding of their many-body quantum behavior. The fundamental science of the M2QM aims to address the two primary technological challenges: 1) how to create qubits for intrinsically quantum computing, and 2) how to replace elements of traditional computers and sensors with intrinsically quantum, molecule-based devices that are energy efficient as well as fast and adaptive. In this setting, reliable, swift, all-electron calculations of magnetically complex materials are crucial.
This position will involve working on spin transitions and magnetoelectric couplings in Molecular Magnetic systems, dynamics and decoherence of spin and clock transition, spin-spin couplings, spin-environment interactions in junctions. The candidate is expected to interact with other M2QM members and help advise students.
This position will be initially awarded for one year, and, contingent upon strong performance, conduct, and availability of funds, may be renewed for up to three years.
Expected Salary:
The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the compensation includes a full benefits package.
Employment Benefits include:
Health Insurance: UF participates in state- and university-sponsored benefits programs for individuals, families, and domestic partners, and offers voluntary insurance that includes vision, dental, long-term disability and more.
Retirement Options: Attractive options include Florida Retirement System Pension Plan, State University System Optional Retirement Program, Florida Retirement System Investment Plan, and Voluntary Retirement Savings Plan.
Leave: UF staff enjoy a generous paid leave plan as well as access to a sick-leave pool, parental leave, and leave payouts.
Minimum Requirements:
Successful candidates must hold a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a close area, and postdoctoral research experience is expected.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in DFT and beyond DFT methods, high-level quantum chemistry, machine learning, high-throughput modeling of complex materials, model Hamiltonian-based spin dynamics, or in IETS is a plus.
Postdoctoral research experience is expected
Special Instructions to Applicants:
For full consideration, applications must be submitted online. Click on Apply Now at the top of this posting.
A complete application includes: (1) a full curriculum vitae (including publication list) (2) a letter of application summarizing the applicant's qualifications, interests, and suitability for the position, (3) research statement and goals and also indicate the research areas in which you are interested, and (4) the names and email addresses of three references must be provided. An email will be sent to your references, requesting them to upload their confidential letter to the submission packet.
Applications will be reviewed beginning December 4, 2023, and the position will remain open until filled. Only complete applications will be reviewed at this time. Applications received after this date may be considered at the discretion of the committee and/or hiring authority. For inquiries, please contact contact Professor Xiaoguang Zhang, the director of M2QM at m2qm.efrc@phys.ufl.edu.
All candidates for employment are subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.
The selected candidate will be required to provide an official transcript to the hiring department upon hire. A transcript will not be considered "official" if a designation of "Issued to Student" is visible.
