Job description

Summary
Facebook Reality Labs Research (FRL Research) brings together a world-class R&D team of researchers, developers, and engineers with the shared goal of developing AR and VR technologies that ship in five to ten years. Come work alongside world leading scientists and engineers to create the technologies that make MR, VR, and AR pervasive and universal. The Sensors and Systems Research team (SSR) is currently seeking researchers with experience designing, modeling, and prototyping advanced vision systems for real-time, low-power, embedded devices. We are looking for innovators and systems thinkers to develop future generations of intelligent, low power imaging systems. As a Research Scientist in SSR, you'll partner with expert Research Scientists, electrical engineers, software engineers, and other brilliant minds to build novel prototypes integrated with advanced AR/VR headsets. You'll foster scientific explorations and generate viable paths to the consumer products that will connect people in meaningful ways for decades to come. You'll work on a wide range of technologies, from sensor design, bring up, and validation to standing up prototypes and system level demonstrations and explorations. Together, let's step into the adventure of a lifetime as we make science fiction real and change the world.
Research Scientist, Camera System Prototypes Responsibilities:
  • Propose, development, bring-up, and analyze proof of concept and prototype Camera Systems.
  • Lead research activities focused on image sensors, end-to-end optimization of imaging pipelines, and Camera System architecture.
  • Partner with cross-functional engineering teams (Electrical Engineering, Firmware Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, System Architects, Sensor Technology, Technical Program Management) for development of imaging systems and camera hardware.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • PhD degree or equivalent experience in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • Successful record of publication in international research venues (e.g. NeurIPS, CVPR, ECCV, ICCV, MobiCom, MobiSys, SenSys, ICCP)
  • Experience defining and solving research problems in computer vision, computational imaging, real-time vision, mobile sensing, or robotics/automotive vision in an academic or industrial research lab
  • Effective prototyping and programming (Python and/or C++) skills and experience using deep learning software libraries such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
  • Hands-on experimental hardware and/or prototyping experience in computational photography, computational imaging, sensor systems, or related topics

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with low level software (firmware & drivers in C or C++) a strong plus
  • Experience with image sensor systems (e.g. prototype building, system integration) a strong plus
  • Experience with synchronous and asynchronous serial protocols (e.g. I3C, CSI-2, SPI)
  • Experience in electrical circuit design and test
