Job description

UES, a BlueHalo Company, is looking for a Research Scientist in the field of biomaterial characterization and fabrication. The candidate will conduct basic and applied research to develop biomaterial composites using structural proteins such as keratin, silk and other biopolymers for Air Force applications. An individual with experience with the processing of synthetic or natural biopolymers into fibers, using techniques such as wet spinning, dry spinning or electrospinning is highly desirable. The candidate will work in the Biomaterials Branch within the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. The successful candidate will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team to publish peer-reviewed scientific articles, write technical reports, and assist with maintenance and training related to the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) laboratory.

The position is ideal for a PhD. level scientist who is interested in bridging the gap between material fabrication and synthetic biology.

  • Morphological, mechanical, thermal characterization of biopolymers and hybrid materials.
  • Investigate the role of processing in structure-property relationships of candidate material systems.
  • Perform related analytical, computational, and experimental research tasks.
  • Summarize research findings in technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
  • Manage maintenance of the AFM lab and assist with trainings of new users.

  • This position involves working within a government facility and requires U.S. Citizenship
  • Ph.D. (or to be completed in the next 6 months) in Biology, Biochemistry, Materials Science, Chemistry, Bioengineering or a related field.
  • Extensive material characterization expertise. Preferred candidate should be able to run and troubleshoot AFM instruments and assist with lab maintance and training of new users.
  • Willingness to expand the scientific knowledge base through interdisciplinary research.
  • Ability to learn and master new approaches and techniques.
  • The candidate should have extensive experience in biopolymer processing, hybrid material formulation or advanced characterization, as evidenced by research publications in peer-reviewed journals and professional society conference presentations.
  • The candidate must have hands-on experience in processing of synthetic or natural biopolymer into fibers, films, foams and other form factors.  Experience with spinning techniques such as wet spinning, dry spinning or electrospinning is highly desirable.
  • Additional desired experience includes morphological characterization (using SEM and TEM), thermo-mechanical characterization, investigating corresponding electrical and optical properties, and establishing techniques to develop structure-property relationships.
