Summary of Duties:
The Research Operations Engineer will be in charge of the design maintenance and operation of BSEL laboratories and pilot-scale process equipment related to the production of bioproducts and bioenergy, which may include biomass pretreatment systems; biomass fermentation systems, including both hexose and pentose sugars to ethanol; thermochemical biomass conversion and product extraction systems; liquid/solids separation and dewatering systems; and products development systems.
This position will carry out the design, maintenance and operation of laboratory and pilot plant equipment, focused on improving system performance and operations. This position will interface with graduate students, researches and faculty on the collection of experimental data. Will also be responsible for BSEL purchases and chemical inventory maintenance.
Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and experience performing professional-level work with scientific or engineering research protocols. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. Experimental and analytical skills; understanding and knowledge of research theory; excellent organizational and project management skills.
  • Experience in an industrial process engineering or scientific research setting, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Industrial process systems; organization and methodical skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule (may be required to work long hours on an irregular schedule and the hours can include 12-hour shifts, three or four days a week).
  • MS Office or equivalent computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience as an engineering process technician, equipment maintenance technician, or engineering assistant.
  • Demonstrated experience in a field such as industrial food processing, wastewater treatment or utility plant maintenance and/or operations.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in engineering with 15 years experience.
  • Extensive industrial experience, particularly steam plant/boiler operations and/or maintenance experience.
  • Previous university employment.

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
