Job description

MD Anderson's Cancer Biology department has a long history of being a leader in the field of basic and translational Cancer Biology research. The department emphasizes the training of students, postdoctoral fellows and clinical fellows in the fundamentals of tumor biology to improve the outcomes of patients with malignancies. The department has built a program with close ties to many clinical departments to facilitate information exchange between the laboratory and the clinic. As such, faculty in the department are investigators on NIH funded collaborative Cancer Biology research grants. In addition, there are several physician-scientists who have joint appointments in Cancer Biology, facilitating the exchange of clinically-relevant information between the laboratory and the clinic.
KEY FUNCTIONS
Management

  • Leads research initiatives and provides oversight of the bladder cancer and chemo-resistance research programs.
  • Manages research staff including recruitment, education, evaluation, and retention of competent qualified personnel
  • Leads the team in decision-making process for establishing project goals and guides their accomplishments with cross-organizational impact on multiple projects
  • Determines specific goals or objectives to be obtained, evaluates research data and develops and revises techniques or approaches to work
  • Supervises daily laboratory operations of the Gottlieb laboratory and performs experiments related to bladder cancer and chemo-resistance research programs
  • Works closely with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows in the laboratory to investigate bladder cancer and chemo-resistance research
  • Supervises technicians in their work and assists them as assigned
  • Responsible for ordering supplies, managing budgets, and maintaining laboratory equipment and reagents

Development
  • Responsible for the development and utilization of a quality system approach to develop protocols.
  • Introduces, Integrates and applies novel technologies and/or ideas across multiple projects.
  • Develop and manage protocols (e.g.; IRB protocols), and manuals as needed.
  • Reviews and updates protocols annually to ensure quality standard procedures are met.
  • Develops information that extends knowledge in the field and identifies solutions for potential project problems.
  • Contributes with independent thinking, leadership skills and technical knowledge to consistently introduce new concepts and groundbreaking solutions.

Science
  • Responsible for major participation in the development and revision of techniques, assembles and operates laboratory apparatus and equipment
  • Utilize various computer and experimental systems and databases to enter, retrieve, compile, data, prepare reports for review with scientific team.
  • Collaborates with or assists supervisor and senior research staff with preparation of reports and grant requests
  • Ensures compliance with state/federal and institutional guidelines in the storage, use and disposal of materials
  • Exercises considerable imagination, initiative and inventiveness in planning and executing details of experiments and in evaluating and interpreting results
  • May apply for grants with institutional approval
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education
Required: PhD in one of the natural sciences or related field or Medical degree.
Experience
Required: Seven years experience of relevant research experience in laboratory to include three years of managerial experience. Successful completion of the LEADing Self Accelerate program may substitute for one year of required supervisory or management experience.
