Position Responsibilities
Position Summary
Permanent full-time (12 month) tenure track appointment in the Department of Soil and Water Systems (SWS). This position will address the needs of productive small-to-mid acreage farms and a high level of community interest in the local food system in the Sandpoint, Idaho region, with statewide responsibilities.
The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized research-based Extension (70%) program, as well as an extramurally funded research (30%) program focused on cropping systems with a focus on organic and sustainable production in the state of Idaho. Responsibilities include creation and delivery of a state-wide needs assessment for stakeholders engaged in organic agriculture, developing and delivering a multifaceted outreach program to support industry growth and development, provide technical assistance and educate stakeholders in best management and organic practices, building and promoting networking opportunities to build learning communities focused on organic and sustainable farming, postharvest handling, and other areas of interest. The successful candidate will work with a advisory committee of agriculture producers, government agencies as well as CALS faculty including Extension educators, while collaborating with statewide Extension educational programs. Specific areas of research related to regenerative and organic agriculture may include livestock-crop integration, nutrient and water management in sustainable systems, innovative methods for pest management, soil management during organic transition, management impacts on soil health, equipment options and innovation for small farms, or ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and pollinator health. Support and mentorship of graduate students is expected.

Qualifications
Minimum Education/Degree Required

Required Qualifications
- Ph.D. in agronomy, soil science, entomology, plant pathology or closely related scientific discipline or within two years of graduation with a Ph.D. (ABD)
- Experience in sustainable organic agriculture cropping systems.
- Experience in basic and applied cropping system research.
- Experience working in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated knowledge of the organic certification process and organic regulations.
- Demonstrated ability to secure competitive extramural funding.
- Record of refereed and peer reviewed publications in research and Extension.
- Experience developing and delivering Extension programs individually and in collaboration with others.
- Experience training graduate and undergraduate students.
- Ability to communicate in Spanish, both verbally and in writing.
