Job Summary:
Leads design, development, and prototyping of new Mechanical Systems, and maintain existing state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities at NIMSI (Northwestern Initiative for Manufacturing Science and Innovation) in collaboration with faculty, post-docs and students. Examples include new Mechanical Systems (including material testing instruments related to high-temperature bulge tests and metal additive manufacturing), existing instruments (including directed energy deposition machine, laser powder bed fusion system, ultra-precision lathe, laser micro-machining platform, metrology devices, flexible metal forming machines). Experience in pneumatic system design, metal additive manufacturing, precision manufacturing, and control are preferred.
This is a two-year termed position subject to renewal dependent on performance and available funding.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Designs, develops, and prototypes customized material testing instruments. Coordinates with external vendors, suppliers and research collaborators for the construction of the designed instruments. Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve the design and testing performance.
• Participates in instrument requirements definition, design, feasibility testing, risk assessment, and verification and validation testing. Prepares appropriate technical documentation for product design history files and report submissions.
• Maintain the operations of current manufacturing facilities at NIMSI, including customized directed energy deposition machine, laser powder bed fusion system, ultra-precision lathe, laser micro-machining platform, metrology devices, flexible metal forming machines. Helps the management, operations, and training of new users.
• Interacts with students, faculty members, research staffs to support research projects. Participates in research meetings and contributes to the new development of instrumentation in different projects.
Minimum Qualifications: (Education, experience, and any other certifications or clearances)
• Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a mechanical, materials science, or electrical engineering major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience
• Minimum 1 year of experience in machine design.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
• Practical experience in mechanical design, rapid prototyping, various manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of material testing, metal additive manufacturing, instrumentation design, sensors and actuators, data acquisition.
• Ability to use CAD/CAM software (e.g. SolidWorks, NX, etc.)
• Ability to write complex technical reports
• Ability to manage projects and technician day to day activities to ensure on-time performance
• Ability to communicate clearly
• Ability to collaborate with diverse people
Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
• MS in mechanical, materials science, electrical engineering or related majors, or 3 years industrial experience
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
• Ability to program control algorithms in LabView, MATLAB, and/or Python
• Previous experience in pneumatic system design and operations
• Knowledge of finite element modeling (FEM) and ability to program/use commercial FEM software (e.g. Ansys, Abaqus)
Target hiring range for this position will be between $61,242 - $86,121 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
