The Water Health & Applied Microbiology (WHAM) Laboratory within Temple University's College of Public Health announces the availability of two research associate positions in environmental health. The Water, Health and Applied Microbiology (WHAM) Laboratory is housed within the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics in the College of Public Health at Temple University. The lab is currently led by Dr. Heather Murphy. The lab team consists of research fellows, graduate and undergraduate students interested in the field of water and health. The laboratory primarily focuses on microbiological contamination of water supplies and the subsequent impacts on public health.
Dr. Murphy runs a diverse and inclusive research group where everyone feels welcome and respected. The researcher associates will work closely with Dr. Heather Murphy and the rest of the WHAM lab research team in the execution of a complex National Institutes of Health funded randomized controlled trial examining the impact of treating well water with UV light on gastrointestinal illness in children under the age of 5 in Pennsylvania.
Essential functions:
Trial Activities: Lead various recruitment activities and pilot new activities including reaching out to enrollment sites via telephone, social media, and e-mail to ensure adequate enrollment; Editing/ ordering marketing materials for recruitment; Mailing recruitment items to enrollment sites and participants; Oversee recruitment site management (townships, pediatricians, WIC clinics etc); Oversee and assign undergraduate/ graduate and employees to recruitment tasks and track progress; Lead social media campaigns for recruitment and maintain WET Trial website; Prepare and distribute participant and pediatrician newsletters; Prepare participant welcome packages and device labels; Manage recruitment budget; Track inventory for recruitment supplies for the trial and inform trial manager when new supplies need to be ordered; Perform GIS analyses to support recruitment activities and targeting of participants; Interact with and monitor households involved in the WET Trial as needed; Review participant eligibility surveys and contact prospective participants; Distribute gift cards as needed; Assist in writing annual grant reports to the NIH; Assist with data entry, data management and data analysis as needed.
Laboratory Activities: Oversee and complete all lab maintenance tasks such as, tracking laboratory supply inventory, assisting with laboratory management, equipment malfunctions and troubleshooting as needed; Maintain inventory of stool and saliva samples; Perform pre-processing and shipping of stool, water and saliva samples including completing all required paperwork; Perform water quality analyses of water samples collected; Perform data audits and data QA/QC checks as requested by the laboratory manager; Chemical Inventory Management; Biohazard/Chemical Waste Management.
Fieldwork: Oversee and prepare field gear for the collection of water samples; Collect groundwater samples from households as needed; Drive to recruitment sites/ participant homes as needed; Travel to UV device installation company to label UV devices as needed.

Required Education & Experience:
The desired candidate will hold a Bachelor's degree in a field related to the environment with at least three years of relevant work experience is required. A Masters Degree with a focus in environmental health or a similar discipline is preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Required Skills & Abilities:
*Laboratory experience performing water quality analyses including microbiological analyses is required
*Excellent organizational and time management skills
*Excellent interpersonal skills and effective and oral and written English communicator
*Ability to multi-task as well as to prioritize multiple projects and quickly change direction and focus.
*Excellent attention to detail
*Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
*Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of study stakeholders.
*Knowledge of microbiology and environmental pathogens
*Experience conducting reviews of the scientific literature and summarizing the findings
*Demonstrated computer skills, and proficiency with MS Office Suite programs.
*Must be reliable and punctual
*Ability to interact well with all levels and types of staff and organizations and engage external partners in a professional manner.
*Must have a driver's license.
Preferred:
*Experience with website management and GIS

This is a grant funded position.
This position is temporarily assigned a hybrid work arrangement (on-campus and remote), the duration of this hybrid work arrangement is at the discretion of Temple University and the Department.
