Job Description
This faculty position is a 100% research, 12-month appointment involved in multiple cat projects covering diverse topics including movement ecology, transportation-related research, SECR and Occupancy modeling, and conservation genetics. We seek a passionate scholar to be part of an exciting Wild Cat research program focused on field research, quantitative analyses, and mentoring younger professionals. Some international research (southern Africa, northern Israel) and international conferences may be a part of this position. Current target species include ocelot, jaguarundi, bobcat, jaguar (Mexico), leopard (Botswana), and jungle cat (northern Israel). Guest lectures in a graduate conservation biology class every other year will occur. Research results will be shared with stakeholders, Society, and the scientific community through scientific publications and presentations. A portion of the successful applicant's activities will be to assist the team leader with program needs and responsibilities. Initial salary shall be commensurate with qualifications and experience. We are seeking applicants with expertise in one or more of the following areas: movement ecology, population genomics, SECR and Occupancy models, and/or cat behavior including spatial memory and cognition. Field work will be a major part of this position.
Responsibilities:
  • Continue to support and underpin the research, management, and activities of the 40-year ocelot program.

  • Mentor undergraduate/graduate students in their professional development, including publications & presentations.

  • Assist project and program needs; lead and monitor compliance (e.g., IACUC, technology export control).

  • Assist program leader in pursuit of special research projects and targeted funding opportunities.

Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in Wildlife science, ecology, conservation biology, or related field from an accredited university.
  • Proven excellence in Wild Cat, carnivore, or wildlife ecology demonstrated by record of research & productivity.
  • Demonstrated self-initiative to work independently and skills to work within a team.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students, professionals, lay audiences, ranchers, and other scientists.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Successful research experience and expertise with Wild Cats.
  • Strong quantitative skills particularly in movement ecology, spatial & ecological software, and/or genomics software.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with private landowners, faculty, students, and state/federal agencies.
  • Abilities to contribute in a collaborative team environment and a strong background in small population biology.

Location: Texas A&M University-Kingsville (TAMUK) is located in Kingsville, a city of about 25,000 in southern coastal Texas. Kingsville is surrounded by the historic King Ranch and is about 30 miles south of Corpus Christi (population: 300,000), within 25 miles of Baffin Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, and a 2-hour drive from Mexico. TAMUK serves about 8,000 students. The Feline Research Program has been an active part of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute since the inception of both units in 1981.
