We are hiring immediately for a full-time Research Assistant II who is highly motivated, independent, and organized to work in the Cardiometabolic Research Laboratory of the Division of Cardiology at the McGovern Medical School. The ideal candidate will assist in basic and translational research that seeks to advance the scientific knowledge of the molecular mechanisms by which metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes increase the risk to develop and to die from cardiovascular diseases. The work will be performed in the UTHealth laboratories at the Behavioral and Biomedical Sciences Building and South Campus Research Building 3.

Position Summary:
Under general direction of senior research staff, conducts activities to support research projects. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and practices.
Position Key Accountabilities:
- Provide support to the PI and other lab members to ensure efficient, timely and high-quality results
- Maintain research animal colonies and communicate with veterinarians and staff members of the Center for Laboratory Animal Medicine and Care to ensure well-being of the animals.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of experimental data which include keeping of animal monitoring logbooks, laboratory notebooks, and maintenance of electronic databases.
- Monitor laboratory and/or other supplies to ensure sufficient inventory to support research projects.
- Maintain clean laboratory equipment, animal rooms and work area to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
- Stay abreast of new and updated protocols and training programs for the laboratory and communicate with Environmental Health and Safety staff members to implement the occupational health and safety policies and procedures promulgated by the department and by University health and safety committees.
- Comply with all governmental and University policies, rules, regulation and codes.
Certification/Skills:
- General knowledge and some detailed concepts of research field assigned.
Minimum Education:
- Bachelor's degree or relevant experience in lieu of education.
Minimum Experience:
- One year of related experience in a research or clinical lab environment.
- May substitute required experience with equivalent years of education beyond the minimum education requirement.
Physical Requirements:
Exerts up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or 10 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
This position may include work involving potentially hazardous chemical, biological or radioactive agents.
