Summary
The Prechter Bipolar Research program at the University of Michigan carries out research in bipolar disorder. Through our flagship Longitudinal Study of Bipolar Disorder, we maintain an ongoing relationship with our participants that blends clinical, biological, and treatment outcomes with genetic research to provide clues to the course of bipolar disorder and how each individual should be treated. In addition to the Longitudinal study, multiple other studies are run through the lab.

Responsibilities*
With guidance from senior faculty and research personnel, the Research Area Specialist Associate will handle organizational and administrative details of assigned projects, including but not limited to:
  • Participant recruitment (via the community, UMHealthResearch, UM inpatient psychiatry, etc.)
  • Perform diagnostic screens, obtain informed consent, and schedule potential research subjects according to study inclusion/exclusion criteria.
  • Coordinate study visits and long-term follow-up of study participants with some oversight of day to day operation of project.
  • Collect data and enter into appropriate systems for future analysis.
  • Assess mood in participants, using standardized questionnaires. Perform other study procedures as required by study protocols. Examples of other procedures may include collection, processing, and management of biological samples (e.g. blood, saliva, etc.), neuropsychological testing, working with mobile phone apps, set up and collection of EEG data, and/or assisting participants through an fMRI scan.
  • Assist in preparation of IRB applications, progress reports, and other summary materials.
  • Create and manage study materials (Standard Operating Procedures, recruitment materials, etc.).

The Research Area Specialist will act as a liaison between participants and members of the study team. With guidance this individual will take a lead role in managing one of the program's studies. This person will be effective at helping with identification of research participants and recruitment into studies.
Opportunities exist for individual research projects as well as working with faculty members on scientific posters and papers.
Required Qualifications*
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • One - three years of work experience related to mental health or research.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Quick thinking, problem-solving skills, and ability to change tasks quickly and frequently.

Desired Qualifications*
  • Some understanding of bipolar disorder and mood instability.
  • Some familiarity with or specific interest in fMRI, EEG, Neuropsychological testing, and or mobile mental health technologies.
  • Familiarity with REDCap, Qualtrics, or similar data management software.
  • Familiarity with MiChart, EPIC, or other Medical Charting systems.
  • Ability to work comfortably with biological samples.

Work Schedule
9 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday
Work Locations
This is a hybrid position. Individuals in this position will be expected to work onsite at the Rachel Upjohn Building (located in the East Ann Arbor Medical Campus) during training and onboarding. Thereafter remote work is possible with approximately 2-3 days each week onsite at the Rachel Upjohn Building, or as required by study or program needs.

This position is a term-limited position for two years. Extension of the role beyond two years is contingent on the continued availability of funds. If not renewed at the end of the term, this appointment will not be eligible for Reduction-in-Force (RIF) benefits. This term-limited appointment does not create a contract or guarantee of employment for any period of time as you will remain subject to disciplinary or other performance measures, up to and including termination, at the will of the University in accordance with existing University policy and standards for employee performance and conduct.
Background Screening
Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third-party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
In addition to the screenings indicated above under Michigan law, a criminal history check including fingerprinting is required as a condition of transfer or employment for this position.
