Job description

The Johns Hopkins University is seeking to hire a Research Animal ResourcesTraining Supervisor who will develop, manage, and deliver the universities training program. The successful candidate must demonstrate adaptability, proficiency, and patience in leading training sessions for a wide range of species, such as: mice, rats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, cats, dogs, birds, sheep, non-human primates, and aquatics. Additional responsibilities include tracking and documentation of training and collaborating effectively with research management to develop training materials.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assist managers in writing and updating all Research Animal standard operating procedures.
  • Manage and coordinate special topics monthly or weekly if needed.
  • Coordinate and teach AALAS classes.
  • Manage, schedule, and track all employees AALAS test scores and report the outcome to the Director of Laboratory Animal Management.
  • Oversee / manage the use of the online American Association for Laboratory Animal Science Learning Library.
  • Coordinate and develop an online system for tracking animal care staff trainings and job skill competencies.
  • As Animal Care Supervisor provide individual training on mouse, rat, and rabbit animal handling, husbandry, and biology to care staff, investigators, and labs.
  • Set up mandatory large animal access classes in myLearning.
  • Assist mandatory rodent training classes in myLearning.
  • Assist with organization of mandatory or optional specialized training for labs conducting procedures outside of centrally managed facilities.
  • Oversee training of lab personnel needing facility access
  • Assist Clinical Veterinarians to arrange, organize, and track the types of training sessions that don't involve RAR staff but are critical for reporting during program review.
  • Inventory, order, and stock training and resource materials for AALAS and in house Research Animal Resources training.
  • Curriculum development or educational program management
  • Track activities, milestones, and deliverables, and report on a routine basis.
  • Develop templates as needed for tracking employee development.
  • In collaboration with the directors and managers provide new innovative training to the Research Animal Resources Department.
  • Monitors use of resources in accordance with project plans and budgets.
  • Generates reports to the Director of Laboratory Animal Management on the progress of care staff and supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required in Biology, Zoology, Animal Science, Psychology, Behavioral Biology or other related field.
  • Three years of related experience in laboratory animal research, laboratory animal care, or a training & compliance position.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications
  • AALAS LAT or LATG certification or veterinary technician training.
  • Animal handling and restraint.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
