Summary
To perform a variety of duties involved in enforcing City and state laws governing the care and upkeep of animals in the City and to have compassion, passion for the animals, and computer literacy is a must.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain rescue group database and communication/correspondence
- Maintain foster home database and communication/correspondence
- Manage and coordinate the animal rescue process through organizations like "SPCA" and "Operation Kindness" and multiple other local, state and national organizations for available animal and shelter needs
- Coordinate rescue and foster outreach activities
- Develop and implement strategies to recruit and retain rescues and fosters
- Give specific information about animals
- Explain rescue/foster processes
- Implant microchips properly and safely to both shelter animals and owned animals from citizens
- Develop and execute ideas and plans to promote live release, network animals, promote awareness of the shelter, and pursue public education opportunities
- Attend and assist with planning off-site events to promote the shelter and the shelter animals
- Cross-trains with administrative staff
- Transfers animals between quarters
- Records information according to instructions such as genealogy, diet, weight, medications, food intake, and license number
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor
Supervisory Responsibilities
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience
- Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent
- Experience with animal training and or advanced animal handling in an animal shelter preferred
- 1+ years of experience with veterinary medicine (preferred)
- Knowledge in basic animal care and identifying domestic animal breeds, high level of animal behavior, proper housing, common health problems and high level of safe animal handling (i.e. neonatal kittens)
- Knowledge of social media (i.e. Facebook, Twitter)
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
Valid Class C Driver's License. Basic Animal Control Officer through the Texas Department of Health is preferred or the ability to obtain certification within six months of employment.
