What do we need?

We are seeking a Coding Specialist to work on behalf of medical providers, you will be responsible for reviewing claims for both Inpatient and Outpatient hospital accounts to validate coding on claims and either confirm coding is correct or make recommendations for coding changes.

What will you provide?

  • Reviews hospital claims for accuracy of Diagnosis codes, CPT, HCPCS and/or Procedure codes within established coding guidelines, rules, and regulations. Types of coding reviews may include but not limited to; DRG validation, claim edits, multi-specialty surgical coding, facility coding in inpatient, outpatient departments and Observation units.
  • Ensures the data integrity of coded patient records by reviewing the medical documentation and validating that documentation is sufficient to support the assigned codes
  • Reviews medical records to determine if the denial is accurate and/or recommend any coding changes to correct the denial
  • Works in collaboration with coding team members and other departments to meet internal monthly goals
  • Documenting account information into our Health Information System and/or Hospital Patient accounting system (EPIC, Cerner, Citrix etc.)
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Ability to reviews and interprets health record documentation to identify pertinent diagnosis/procedures that require code assignment for inpatient, observation, ER, outpatient, and/or ASC settings.
  • Demonstrates appropriate utilization of coding software and coding reference material.
  • Ability to abstract pertinent information from patient medical records
  • Computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Attention to detail with problem solving mentality
  • Ability to be resourceful and proactive when issues arise
  • Strong communication (both oral and written), documentation, and critical thinking skills essential
  • Strong problem solving and decision making
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Ability to multi-task and provide quality work
  • HIPPA compliant

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Coding certification for hospital billing (COC, CIC, etc.) required
  • Minimum 2 years previous facility/hospital coding and abstracting experience required.
  • Demonstrated understanding of coding guidelines and concepts including understanding of hospital/facility claims.
  • Ability to type a minimum of 40 WPM
  • Experience with healthcare receivables, insurance claims, denial, and appeal processing
  • Appeal writing experience a plus
