Catalyzing a cleaner future.

At ESS (NYSE: GWH), our mission is to accelerate global decarbonization by providing safe, sustainable, long-duration energy storage that powers people, communities, and businesses with clean, renewable energy anytime and anywhere it’s needed. As more renewable energy is added to the grid, long- duration energy storage is essential to providing the reliability and resiliency we need when the sun is not shining and the wind is not blowing.

Our technology uses earth-abundant iron, salt, and water to deliver environmentally safe solutions capable of providing up to 12 hours of flexible energy capacity for commercial and utility-scale energy storage applications. Established in 2011, ESS Inc. enables project developers, independent power producers, utilities, and other large energy users to deploy reliable, sustainable long-duration energy storage solutions. ESS is looking for a motivated and hard-working Reliability Engineer to join our team. This person is responsible for providing expertise to predict, prevent, or reduce equipment failures and improve product design through application of reliability techniques and cross functional work towards improving systems operations. The ideal candidate has experience with reliability tools and methods, and is proficient in data analysis with the aim of providing prognostics based on internal testing data, and field reliability and downtime reports of deployed systems, identifying repetitive problems and developing solutions to achieve asset-equipment reliability goals in line with business objectives and maintenance costs. This role involves working closely with design, manufacturing, and quality assurance teams to identify and mitigate risks, improve product lifespan, and ensure customer satisfaction.

What you’ll do at ESS.

  • Analyze durability performance data of both test and field units, identify trends and areas for improvement. Set up criteria and prepare detailed reports on reliability findings and recommendations.
  • Organize metrics to identify recurring problems and develop solutions for deployed products.
  • Maintain lessons learned records and ensure communication feedback closure between field, testing and development engineering teams.
  • Perform system and component level design FMEA to assess design risk and identify mitigation actions.
  • Contribute to developing the Reliability Engineering function spanning from design to manufacturing and long-term operation and maintenance of our energy storage systems.

What you bring to the table.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Engineering, Chemistry, or related Physical Sciences disciplines.
  • Experience working on equipment reliability, failure rate predictions, failure analysis and RCCA implementation.
  • Experience with FMEA, FMECA, and other analysis tools.
  • Experience with numerical reliability models (i.e. Weibull), accelerated testing metrics and planning, acceleration factors and sample size determination.
  • Knowledge of wet chemistry, electrochemistry, batteries, and power electronics.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with dynamic cross functional teams.
  • Comfortable in an environment with unstructured, incomplete, and ambiguous data.

We’d love to see:

  • Working experience on reliability models (i.e. Weibull), accelerated testing metrics and planning, acceleration factors, sample size determination and reliability growth demonstration for components and subsystems.
  • Experience with software platforms such as ReliaSoft, Weibull++, MiniTab, and others.
  • Experience with battery or fuel cell design and validation.
  • Experience with complex systems involving chemical, material, mechanical and electrical failure modes.

Benefits of working at ESS.

In addition to the value of working with and helping grow a global reaching clean technology, ESS offers Company assisted medical, dental and vision, 401k with Company match, Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP), a generous PTO accrual, and 8 paid holidays.

As an equal opportunity employer, we are open to considering every qualified candidate who is eligible and legally authorized to work in the United States on a full or part-time basis, without a need for sponsorship.
