Following successful completion of the dialysis program, the hemodialysis RN will be able to initiate, monitor, discontinue, tear down and clean equipment used for dialysis. The hemodialysis RN assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates treatment prescriptions. The hemodialysis RN recognizes emergent situations and appropriately intervenes. They collaborate with the multidisciplinary teams.
- Practices within the boundaries of the NYS Practice Act for Registered Professional Nurses.

- Provides and oversees the delivery of renal replacement therapies to the end stage renal disease and acute renal failure patients.

- Implements treatment plan changes using Clinical Guidelines for End Stage Renal Disease patient management.
- Collaborates and consults with multidisciplinary team.

- Identifies issues related to quality of care and maintains an ongoing awareness and participation in unit improvement activities.
- Supports organization and Renal Services quality initiatives. Collects quality data as needed.
- Orientates patients and families to the unit.

- Enters data and updates orders into Electronic Medical Record (EMR).
- Accurately and appropriately documents patient treatment data, response to treatment, medications administered, treatment complications, and patient status within the Electronic Medical Record
- Participates in orientation of new staff.
- May serve as preceptor to new RNs, LPN, and Hemodialysis Technicians.
- Serves as a clinical resource to LPNs and Hemodialysis Technicians
- Anticipates and provides the patient and family with education specific to the patient and family needs.
- Collaborates with appropriate team members to develop the education plan. Identifies barriers to learning.
- Educates patients/families regarding relevant disease processes and treatment plans.
- Utilized unit defined patient education protocol and patient education materials.
- Demonstrates appropriate use of organizational resources (phones, e-mails, internet, photocopies, supplies, etc).
- Demonstrates support of and contributes to a culture that allows staff to feel appreciated, included and valued.
- Demonstrates good communication skills.
- Maintain annual competency including but not limited to annual Health Assessment requirements, CPR competencies, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing required.
- Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in New York State.
- Minimum one year as Registered Nurse
- Previous hemodialysis experience preferred.
- Previous critical care experience preferred.
- Requires excellent customer service skills.
- Demonstrates flexibility and willingness to learn new skills.
- Successful completion of the orientation program.
- Completion of CVPH Cardiac Arrhythmia Recognition Class within one year.
- Meets requirements of physical/pre-placement screening.
