Position requirements
- Graduate of an accredited RN program
- Current RN license, in good standing with the State licensing board
- Current BLS
- Ability to work with culturally diverse population
- Excellent oral and written communication
Position responsibilities
Corrections Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to the correctional-facility based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, primary tasks of Correctional Nurses are as follows:
- Collaborates with the primary care providers and other health care providers to ensure continuity, timeliness and appropriateness of care to offender patients
- Coordinates and/or administers medications, therapeutic agents, treatments, to offender patients
- Assists providers with medical treatments
- Administers prescribed medication
- Applies surgical dressings and bandages
- Provides emergency first aid care
- Assess Offender’s condition and nursing needs by using nursing assessment skills to gather and record various information used in clinical decision making
- Checks and records vital signs
- Obtains specimens from offender patients for diagnostic testing
- Reports reactions to treatments and medication, as well as changes in the offenders’ emotional or physical condition
- Provides offender patient education and/or discharge planning
- Records all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner, in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms
- Promotes a therapeutic environment to ensure inmates are treated in a professional, ethical and tactful manner
- Acts independently without specific instructions, utilizing time and resources effectively
- Performs other position-related duties as assigned
Working conditions
- Requires working independently with little or no supervision
- Must have the ability to work any or all of the seven days of the week, including but not limited to, Saturdays or Sundays or both; and work any shift of the day, including, but not limited to, days, swing or graveyard and holidays.
- Requires contact with adults in custody, who may become aggressive in a correctional setting
- Requires walking or standing for lengthy periods of time, stair climbing, bending, stooping, lifting 20 # frequently, 50# occasionally
- May be exposed to chemicals, communicable diseases or other hazards inherent in a health care and correctional setting
- Works closely with correctional staff while having direct contact with offenders
In a correctional environment, all staff receives specific training in the areas of security and correctional procedures and there are many security measures in place. Nurses working in correctional facilities follow the guidelines set forth by the correctional facility with the understanding that public safety and security is first and foremost.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $45.00 - $49.00 per hour
