RequiredQualifications:
- Possession of a current license to practice in the State of New Mexico as an RN
- Radiation Oncology nursing experience
- Ability to understand and prepare complex written materials, such as patient records
- Ability to communicate verbally with all levels of associates and management, physicians, patients, and their families
- Ability to work without close supervision and able to exercise independent judgment in a professional area
- Ability to organize multiple task and projects and maintain control of workflow
- Requires much walking, lifting, and physical exertion. Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of fifty (50) pounds
- Requires full range of motion
- Current CPR certification
- Fluent in English

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assesses the patient’s condition, systematically utilizing verbal and technical nursing skills, to establish a basis for patient care
- Establishes pertinent nursing interventions during assessment, treatment and follow up
- Assesses patient’s response to pain medications and chemotherapy drugs
- Evaluates level and severity of side effects and refers patients to physician for further assessment of pain, nausea, and side effects as needed
- Assist physician with examination of patients
- Assists Radiation Therapist with treatment of patients as requested
- Monitors patient’s nutritional status
- Ensures that nutritional counseling is provided to patients as needed
- Maintain patient stats throughout their course of treatment
- Reconcile outpatient medication lists
- Address chemoradiation on concurrent patients. Be familiar with radio-sensitizing agents and those drugs that increased incidence of radiotherapy toxicities
- Completes the care navigation portion in EMR
- Initiates patient care activities as needed, based on written care plan, knowledge of professional nursing standards of care
- Ensures that patient care activities are handled properly, such as, administration of medications, IV maintenance, venipunctures and changing of dressings
- Coordinates patient care activities with other medical health departments, services and provide technical information and assistance to physicians and other departments as needed
- Identifies the learning needs of patients and family members
- Provide teaching and or education to meet the needs of the patients, including radiation therapy or chemotherapy procedures as well as physical and psychological factors affecting patients and their families
- Refers patients and family members to other sources of information, such as, Social Services, nutritional Services and Pastoral Care
- Documents education and or teachings in patient’s record
- Demonstrates increasing independence in the performance of, technical skills required by chosen specialty
- Takes the initiative in identifying opportunities for self-development and enhancement of professional competency thru continuing education activities
- Demonstrates effective customer relations skills, promotes a positive work environment, and contributes to the overall team effort
- Provides professional, efficient, and courteous communication to all patients, family members and staff
- Maintains a caring and compassionate work environment
- Understands, applies, and supports hospital/departmental policies, procedures, and standards
- All RN’s will be required to wear required SJRMC RN scrubs on OTV day
- Maintains HIPPA standards
- Performs other duties as assigned

Physical Demands and Environmental Work Conditions:
- Activities may include intermittent or prolonged: standing, walking, sitting, talking, hearing, pushing, pulling, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching with arms and using the hands to handle or feel
- Repetitive motions may also be required, such as: wrist / hand movements, grasping, and finger dexterity (as in typing, writing, etc.)
- The job requires exposure to the following conditions: risk of radiation, working near moving or mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock
- The noise level may vary from very quiet to very loud
- Hearing:
o Must be able to hear, alarms on equipment, fire alarms, overhead announcements
o Patients/families verbal discussions
o Instructions/feedback from other healthcare providers
- Vision:
o Must be able to see and focus on close-up and distant objects
o Distinguish colors
o Have intact: peripheral vision
o Depth perception: judge distance and spatial relationships
