Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Regional Food Safety Specialist will be responsible for developing, administering and maintaining applicable Food Safety Programs & Policies; implementation and continuous improvement of Food Safety focused programs including but not limited to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) benchmarked Food Safety and preventative control programs.  The Regional Food Safety Specialist will not only lead the implementation, but they will be responsible for maintaining the system and making sure it is effective using verification and validation.  The Regional Food Safety Specialist will facilitate communication about the information related to the system's implementation and maintenance. Uses independent judgment in the best interest of the company. This job description is an overview of the current job duties required for this position; although not all inclusive, its purpose is to familiarize you with its requirements. Additionally, other job duties may be added or deleted as this form may be periodically updated. 

 

Here’s what you’ll do:

    • Monitors SpartanNash Food Safety plan as mandated by the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), including all verification and validations activities; identify potential biological, chemical, and physical hazards that can jeopardize the safety of products. 

    • Travels to assigned regional locations at least two to four times annually depending on the condition and assessments of each assigned facility. (Could be more depending on need).  

    • A home base location will be assigned aka Center of Excellence where 60% of time throughout the week will be required when not traveling to a regional location. 

    • Evaluate Food Safety concerns in each assigned facility and implement programs to eliminate hazards. 

    • Performs pre AIB Audit assessment 4 weeks prior to scheduled AIB audit Date. 

    • Performs quarterly GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) audits and corrective action reports. 

    • Maintains frequent communication and coaching with assigned Distribution Centers. 

    • Create and maintain reporting on key Food Safety measures (i.e., FSMA, Food Safety audit results, corrective actions, etc.) and drive continuous improvement.  

    • Work closely with Sanitation and Maintenance Departments to confirm master sanitation and maintenance scheduled activities are on task.  

    • Review Food Safety training reports for new associates and monitor company refresher training for assigned distribution centers.  

    • Confirms that documents, forms, and corrective actions are being completed.   

    • Must be employed by SpartanNash as a company employee on a full-time basis.  

    • Have completed Food Safety certifications courses and a Preventative Controls for Human Food (FSPCA) training course. 

    • Maintain current knowledge of legal regulations, industry trends and Food Safety best practices; make recommendations to improve current programs and processes and ensure company legal compliance.  

    • Additional projects that are assigned by Supply Chain Food Safety Manager or Director of Food Safety and Compliance.

Here’s what you’ll need: 

  • 2-7 years’ practical experience in Food Safety or Management of Quality or Production, or a Project Management position in the food industry. 

  • HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point system), FSPCA (Food Safety Preventative Controls for Human Foods) and SQF or BRC certifications desired. 

  • If not certified, understand the AIB, SQF or BRC Code and the requirements for implementing and maintaining GFSI System relevant to the supplier scope of certification.  

  • Identify and assess potential Food Safety hazards and quality defects. 

  • Effectively train essential plant employees in Preventative Control principles and applicable GFSI principles. 

  • Drive continuous improvement 

  • Affect change through indirect leadership 

  • Write SOPs and work instruction and conduct GMP audits in a timely basis. 

  • Effectively work with Operations Managers, warehouse teams and other members of Food Safety team to develop and maintain a robust and effective Food Safety system. 

  • Possess excellent written and verbal skills and be proficient at Word, Excel, PowerPoint 

  • Ability to work with others along with working independently and efficiently. 

  • Meet scheduled deadlines 

  • Positive mental attitude 

  • Ability to multitask in completing scheduled activities along with random activities.

While performing the duties of this position, the associate is subject to a typical office environment and is rarely exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate but may be high in distribution settings. Travel requirements vary by assignment.
