Summary: The Recreation Manager is responsible for the successful administration of all facets of recreational programing and athletic areas within the MetroParks. This position is directly responsible for the operations of the boat houses, recreational sport spaces (Scholl Field, Volney Field, Disc Golf Course) and the Wick Recreation Area. This position is suitable for transitional duty.
Primary Responsibilities
Recreation Management 60%
- Oversee and assist with special events, races, concerts, athletic team scheduling and recreation related programming
- Develop both short and long-term plans for recreational programs, league recruitment and related services
- Monitor, evaluate and prepare recreational program and event assessments and provide recommendations based upon the completed assessments
- Prepare accurate cost estimates and develop cost recovery formulas for recreation services to maximize value
- Coordinate ordering, scheduling, renting, delivery and storage of supplies, materials, tools and equipment for projects and events
- Conduct public presentations and attend trade shows to promote recreation programs
- Work closely with the Community Engagement Department on promoting various programs and services effectively
- Serve as both a MetroParks liaison and a resource for community groups, civic associations and similar organizations to ensure strong communication with community
- Manage and ensure compliance with contracts and paperwork necessary for special events, rental and field use agreements, league partnerships, etc.
- Oversee merchandise concessions at Wick and Disc Golf Course, including merchandise selection, inventory control and product promotion
- Work closely with the Wick Recreation food and beverage lessee for event coordination and day to day operation
- Oversee the MetroParks Trolley program and activities
Supervision of Related Personnel and Activities 30%
- Provide leadership, direct supervision and support to assigned employees and volunteers
- Hire, train and discipline employees, ensure that daily actions are of a positive and professional manner
- Review, approve and maintain all necessary records, including but not limited to time cards, program records and purchase orders
- Monitor and adjust staffing levels to ensure public and facility needs are met
- Ensure that all organizational policies, procedures and safety practices are followed
Departmental Functions 10%
- Provide intra-departmental support as needed
- Assist the Golf and Recreation Director in developing, implementing and monitoring the Annual Plan of Operation and corresponding Annual Budget
- Maintain a positive appearance in the eyes of the public at all times
- Perform additional duties as determined by the PGA Director of Golf and Recreation
Essential Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
- Must be highly organized, efficient and capable of managing numerous projects & personnel simultaneously within a high stress, fast paced environment.
- Knowledge of current management techniques with regards to public Recreation
- Must possess proficient technological skills and abilities in the operation of standard computer software including but not limited to Microsoft Office, e-mail, time tracking software, etc
Education/Qualifications
- Must possess a valid Driver's License
- Must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Parks Administration, Recreation, Sports Administration or a closely related field
- Minimum of three (3) years’ demonstrated supervisory experience
- Minimum of five (5) years’ demonstrated experience in the field of sports or recreation
Physical Requirements Necessary to Perform Job Functions
- Must be physically able to perform all tasks inherent to the position
- Ability to walk, traverse or otherwise access trails of all types, natural terrain and all properties under control of the MetroParks under all types of conditions
- Regular and predictable attendance
- Must be able to travel by vehicle to required sites throughout the MetroParks
- Ability to lift 25+ pounds (program materials, sporting equipment)
- Ability to stand, sit, bend or stoop for extended periods of time
- Hand dexterity, ability to pull, push, reach and grab freely
- Able to bend and twist easily from waist
- Ability to professionally and successfully communicate with peers, MCMP staff, and members of the general public, with excellent public presentation skills
- Have physical and mental endurance to work long hours when necessary
