Job description

Under general supervision from the Social Program Manager, helps plan, organize, monitor and assists with social program activities and events. Supervise program activities for participants of all age groups. This job class is treated as FLSA Non-Exempt.


Distinguishing Features: The Recreation Coordinator I differs from the Recreation Coordinator II, by providing more of a supportive role with program activities and events and is entry level position. This position is eligible for progression requiring familiarity with the program and leveraging professional working relationships.


Essential Functions: Essential functions may vary among positions and may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.

1. Programming: Assists with implementing social recreation programs for SRPMIC youth and adults, including:
  • Scouting:
    • Assists with coordinating the Community's Girl Scout program and all boys programs
  • Outdoor Recreation:
    • Helps plan, organize and implement the program's outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, horseback riding, taking tours, etc.
  • Adaptive Programs:
    • Assists with coordinating, planning, implementing, activities for individuals/groups with adaptive special-needs
    • Ensures participant's receive a fun, meaningful and educational experience
  • Teen Programs:
    • Assists with planning, implementing & promoting innovative and creative activities for the teen programs and encourage participation for all teen-age related activities.
    • Implements activities that include an emphasis on culture awareness and service learning.
    • As required, acts as chaperone and provides transportation for events and activities on occasion.
    • Monitors the safety of teen participants involved in monthly activities.
  • Summer Day Camp and Afterschool programs:
    • Helps plan and develop the Community's Summer Day Camp opportunity for youth from grades K thru 12th.
    • Always present and on-site for camps and afterschool programs.
    • Coordinates recreational and educational learning activities for the After-School Program and Camp participants that promotes positive engagement and choices
  • Senior Program:
  • Assists with Athletics Division in coordinating monthly activities for Community Seniors and Adaptive Leisure participants.
  • Assists and implements the Annual Senior Games and other Athletic-Senior sponsored events.
  • Leisure Education Classes:
    • Assists with organizing, monitoring and implementing classes in coordination with the Recreation Education Division

2. Leadership: Assist with providing ideas and suggestions to help guide the strategic vision for the department by assisting with the implementation of recreational programs and activities to meet the needs of participants.
  • Assist with the day to day activities of part-time, temporary employees and WIOA Teen staff.
  • Assists with organizing and assisting with enrollment and registration in the various programs as required.
  • Helps monitor sign-in and sign-out to ensure the youth's release to authorize family members or approved custodial care persons.
  • Helps coordinate all preparation and plan implementation for all Social Programs.

3. Community & Cultural Outreach: Participates in Community outreach efforts to promote the Social Programs to interested participants of all ages.
  • Assists with the development of promotional materials to enhance customer participation in program events and activities.
  • Assists with organizing special holiday celebrations, traditional activities and other annual Community functions as required.
  • Helps coordinate cultural related activities with the Cultural Resources Department including, but not limited to, cultural lessons, immersion technique activities, participation in Day Camp (mini-conference for kids), gardening and arts & crafts.

4. Operations & Administration: Becomes familiar with the behavioral management guidelines. This includes all laws, regulations and rules governing appropriate behavior for social programs.
  • Learns and practices proper reporting procedures and processes for child neglect and abuse.
  • Helps coordinates all participant Guardian agreements regarding behavioral disclaimers.
  • Assists with educating participants about the prescribed dress codes and enforces the code.
  • Helps maintain the SharePoint events calendar to assist with planning and coordination of recreational programs.
  • Learns, and complies with, the proper incident reporting procedures.
  • Becomes familiar with writing and maintaining reports for issues impacting program effectiveness.
  • Assists with the maintenance of program enrollment and daily participation records for use in determining participant interest.
  • Helps coordinate materials inventory and orders supplies and equipment with supervisor's approval.
  • Attends meetings, educational workshops and training sessions as well as assists in other departmental functions as required.
  • Participates in the development of department goals, objectives and internal practices and procedures.

5. Workflow: Assists with the day-to-day Division activities and workflow.
  • Acts as mentor and "go-to" for the temporary and part-time staff.
  • May assist with training new staff.
  • Responds to questions regarding assignments and continually works to improve the program by providing recommendations to address problem areas.
  • Develops and distributes paper and digital flyers, brochures and other promotional materials to promote registration and participation in social programs and activities.
  • Works closely with other CRS divisions to plan, develop and assist with Camps/Events.

6. Professional Training: Maintains currency with all required and necessary professional training.
  • This includes, but is not limited to, annual Child Abuse Training, obtaining & maintaining a Food Handler's Card, CPR and First Aid training, mandatory reporting requirements and "Title IX" training for those who become caregivers for disabled persons.

7. Miscellaneous: Performs other job related duties as assigned by a Recreation Coordinator II, Social Program Manager, Assistant Director or Director.


Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of the culture, customs, traditions, history and government of the SRPMIC.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, local, SRPMIC laws, codes and regulations and procedures pertaining to recreation programs and administration.
  • Knowledge of procedures for developing and implementing a variety of recreational, senior services, youth care and related activities and programs through Community participation.
  • Knowledge of a variety of recreational, social and cultural programs for youths and adults.

  • Skill developing and maintaining accurate detailed program records.
  • Skill developing effective program promotional materials, both digital and on paper.
  • Skill organizing, promoting and operating public events, sporting events, camps and afterschool programs.
  • Skill establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with the public and Tribal officials, representatives of a variety of agencies, organizations and groups and Members of the Community.
  • Skill with multi-tasking and handling multiple priorities.

  • Ability to develop, plan, organize and implement recreation programs and activities.
  • Ability to train temporary and WIOA assigned staff
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all age demographics, both verbally and in writing with Community Members, staff and the public.
  • Ability to use the personal computer and related software including MS Office
  • Ability to navigate and utilize online registration portals and CRS management software
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs.
  • Education & Experience: A High School diploma or GED and one (1) year recreation related work including experience with programming and coordinating structured and specialized recreational activities required.
  • Equivalency: Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience that would allow the candidate to satisfactorily perform the duties of this position, will be considered.
  • Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.
  • May be required to work beyond normal work hours including nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Must successfully pass an extensive background/criminal background check including fingerprinting.
