WHAT YOU WILL DO

This role is on the Electrical Engineering team at Stryker Medical division's Acute Care business unit. We primarily work with patient handling and patient care equipment within the hospital space such as stretchers, hospital beds, and support surfaces. This role falls under the team addressing the high-acuity market, with a focus on products that often come into direct contact with patient.  It includes gaining a deep understanding of customer needs through research and partnership with upstream marketing and also through direct interactions with customers.  Working with a diverse team, you will design, develop, modify, evaluate, and verify electrical components and sub-systems for medical devices.  The role includes the full development process from research to product launch. 

Technical Responsibilities

  • You will design circuits including but not limited to Schematic Capture, Layout and Failure Mode Analysis for PCBA’s, Cables and other electromechanical components.
  • You will independently design and develop electrical components and sub-systems for medical devices.
  • You will develop and apply advanced circuit and electrical system test methods.
  • You will analyze & test for electromagnetic compliance (EMI/EMC), reliability, safety, cost and design for manufacturing/assembly / test.
  • You will conduct advanced problem-solving, identify potential solutions, and evaluate them against component and sub-system requirements.
  • You will conduct and design research and studies to support advanced product design.
  • You will translate user needs to design inputs/specifications and produce advanced component and sub-system level designs.

Business Responsibilities:

  • Advance solutions by applying in-depth knowledge of customer needs, market and competitive offerings.
  • Apply detailed knowledge of clinical procedures to author design inputs.
  • Support Voice of Customer sessions internally and with clinicians.
  • Demonstrate developing financial acumen.

Med Device Compliance:

  • Lead creation and refinement of engineering documentation, such as the Design History file.
  • Follow and mentor others on R&D procedures like design controls and risk management, per the Quality Management System.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work cooperatively with R&D, Quality, Manufacturing, Regulatory, Clinical, Marketing and Project Management to ensure project success as a leader on the team.
  • Identify and support the creation of or improvements to procedures, policies, processes, systems, and technology.
  • Support and execute segments of complex product development to advance projects through the design /development/launch process.
  • Contribute to product development from concept through release.
  • Deliver high quality results with passion, energy and drive to meet business priorities.
  • Build relationships and influence across the engineering groups within the business.

WHAT YOU NEED

Technical Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in EE or related discipline & 6+ years of work experience in Electrical Engineering.
  • Ability to Lead and Teach Electrical Engineers in Electrical Design
  • Advanced understanding of electrical components and manufacturing methods including common failure modes in embedded electronics.
  • Proficiency in the use of CAD and/or other circuit design and analysis tools to design.
  • Knowledge of standard technologies used in industry.
  • Knowledge of basic troubleshooting techniques in electrical hardware & software
  • Ability to interpret and analyze system drawings with basic Mechanical/Software/Electrical Interactions.
  • Knowledge of sub-system, system, and environmental interactions and how to design to them.

Preferred Skills

  • Knowledge of wired interface protocols, including CAN, I2C, UART, RS-232, RS-485, CAN, SPI, LVDS, Ethernet, and DRAM interfaces
  • Experience in DC motor control with brushed and brushless motor applications
  • Knowledge of DC SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply) topologies
  • General understanding of electrical sensor technologies being offered in the industry.
  • Ability to work closely with software, mechanical, and Electrical Engineering disciplines.
  • Experience working with suppliers on process improvements, test methods development e.g. ICT, FCT, AOI.
  • Familiarity with Medical Safety and EMC standard IEC 60601-1
