Offers above the posted amount may occur depending on similarity of internal work or transferability of knowledge, skills, and abilities of internal applicants.
This position may be filled at one of the two levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities. The entry salary is posted above and the senior level starting salary of $54,953.76.
Preference will be given to applicants located in St. Louis or Kansas City area.
Job Location: Central Office, 105 W Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, MO
The Railroad Safety Inspector conducts routine grade crossing, track, hazardous materials, motive power and equipment, operating practices and/or signal inspections. Responsibilities are performed under moderate supervision.

This opening is for one of our CAREER-LADDER positions which offers the opportunity for career advancement without having to participate in the competitive selection interview process. What you'll do:
  • Conducts compliance inspections to ensure carriers maintain safe operations under federal and state regulations.
  • Conducts complaint investigations; obtains data from carriers, conducts interviews, on-site inspections, reviews records and other agency reports; develops a resolution process and prepares a close-out report; works with carriers, citizens, legislators, union representatives and other state and federal agencies to resolve issues; prepares reports of violations when necessary.
  • Plans and implements a program of periodic safety inspections to provide optimum coverage of the railroad mainline track, sidings, and rail yards to detect, locate and evaluate deviations, such as cross-level, gage, and track profiles.
  • Conducts accident investigations to determine root cause; works independently or as a team member to conduct unassisted or joint investigations with law enforcement, federal investigators or carrier officials and determine whether any state or Federal regulations were violated
  • Works with and maintains relationships with state, federal and local law enforcement officials and carriers to support the secure movement of people and goods by establishing processes to identify threats and vulnerabilities to the rail network.
All you need for success:
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED/HiSET
  • Federal Railroad Administration Certification as a Track Inspector, hazmat inspector, motive power and equipment inspector, operating practices inspector, or signal and train control or grade-crossing signal inspector is preferred.
  • Two years of professional or technical experience in railroad construction, maintenance or operating practices; or highway-rail grade-crossing signal construction or maintenance; or regulatory compliance or enforcement; or related areas.
  • Successful completion of a Range of Motion examination.
Special Working Conditions:
  • Job requires regular, statewide, overnight travel.
  • Job requires exposure to physical hazards, health and safety risks, and/or adverse or otherwise undesirable characteristics in the environment.
  • Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
  • Substitution of education for the experience requirement may be allowed.
  • Remote work from another MoDOT facility will be considered.
  • Waiver of minimum requirements may be allowed
