Job Description
The University of Nevada, Las Vegas invites applications for Radiological Safety Technician, Administrative Services [R0136471]
ROLE of the POSITION
The Radiological Safety Technician (RST) will provide support to the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in implementing the UNLV Radiation Safety Program. The primary functions of the RST are:
• Maintain current knowledge of all applicable State and Federal regulations concerning the use of radioactive material
• Assist RSO with response to radiological emergencies
• Maintain, and teach Radiation Safety training courses to faculty, staff, students, and operations/maintenance personnel
• Perform radiological surveys in laboratories and on equipment; collect and analyze air samples; perform personnel and equipment
decontamination
• Assist RSO with the implementation of routine, special, and high-risk radiological work procedures
• Maintain the radioactive material waste program: collect, package, store, and prepare waste containers for shipment to licensed burial
facility
• Operate, maintain, and repair radioactive waste handling and packaging systems
• Ship and receive radioactive material for Authorized Users (AU's)
• Calibrate and operate all portable and fixed radiological analysis instruments including air-sampling devices
• Maintain the internal (bioassay) and external dosimetry programs
• Perform routine radiation source inventories; calculate current activity of radioactive sources, samples and waste; leak test sources
• Interface with University faculty, staff, students, regulators, support groups and public in support of the Radiation Safety Program
In addition to the duties listed above these may also be required:
• To serve as the UNLV Laser Safety Officer (LSO), as defined by the UNLV Laser Safety Program
• To serve as the Alternate Radiation Safety Officer as defined and stipulated in the Nevada Radiation Control Program, Radioactive Material license: 03-13-0305-01
The RSO may also delegate other responsibilities in the various areas of the UNLV Radiological Safety Program to this individual.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Radiological Science or Related Scientific Discipline from an accredited college or university as recognized by the United States Department of Education and/or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and 1-3 years related experience in Health Physics. Work experience using unsealed RAM sources, RAM waste management, and instrument calibration.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
SAME as above, but with 5-7 years related experience in Health Physics, and in addition: RAM waste collection/storage, collection of air samples; and work experience with a wide variety of unsealed radioisotopes/activities.

SALARY RANGE
Salary competitive with those at similarly situated institutions - salary range $58K-$68K.
