This professional level position will apply health physics principles, theories, and for the Radiological Engineering program as part of the Radiation Protection Programs (RP-PROG) group. Under continuous supervision identifies and investigates radiation hazards and assists higher-level staff in the full range of radiological assignments. Performs work to mitigate radiation hazards and ensure a safe working environment for Laboratory personnel. Follows established policies and procedures to perform tasks. Products are reviewed for soundness of technical judgment and overall adequacy. Assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of research, training and monitoring programs to protect laboratory personnel from radiation hazards. May also provide technical guidance in related functional areas to radiation control technicians.
In addition, the successful candidate will:
• Serve in a supporting role representing Radiological Engineering and the Radiation Protection Programs team in the radiological design of new and modified facilities, equipment, and activities to ensure that designs meet regulatory and laboratory radiological protection requirements;
• Ensure that radiation protection concepts and policies are incorporated into Laboratory designs in order to protect workers, the public, and the environment;
• Provide facility, equipment, and system design input required to achieve ALARA; and
• Perform shielding, dose, and ALARA cost-benefit analyses using radiation transport codes and other methods.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
• Entry-level knowledge of the technical principles, theories, concepts and techniques of health physics.
• Entry-level experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting radiological safety/protection.
• Entry-level skill to conceptualize and communicate fundamental elements of radiological safety/protection to both technical and non-technical personnel.
• Entry-level skill in the preparation and presentation of radiological safety/protection reports.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, or a Physical Science and 2 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
• Entry-level experience working with Monte Carlo or Deterministic Transport codes (e.g., MCNP, Attila)
• Entry-level experience working with Computational Fluid Dynamics codes (e.g. Fluent)
• Working knowledge of Health Physics in plutonium and accelerator facilities
• MS in Health Physics, Radiation Protection or related field
• ABHP certification or progress towards an ABHP certification
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level).
