General Description:
• Plan, manage, and supervise the activities of a centralized laboratory & perform standard biological, microbiological, & chemical tests relative to food safety to assure their delivery in an accurate & timely fashion using proper safety precautions.
• Collect and monitor the collection of pre-operational, operational, & environmental samples for testing in the laboratory.
• Prepare and supervise preparation of reagents, media, & solutions necessary for the performance of all laboratory tests.
• Test or trial new & improved laboratory methods & procedures.
• Prepare laboratory notes, reports, charts & graphs.
• Responsible for maintaining lab inventory, ordering all equipment & supplies.
• Create and update all Standard Operating Procedures for lab.
• Evaluate lab staff performance.
• Manage the Food Safety Work Order program and lead Maintenance effort for QA department.
• Member of the audit team - fully participate in internal audits, Purchase Program Audits, BRC Audits, etc.
• Manage the union janitors who are over external and internal grounds keeping.
• Manage the SSOP Program - review daily SSOP audits, perform monthly door and outside HK inspections, etc.
• Prepare and ship customer sample requests
• In charge of Temp Logger Program for carcasses and products in the plant
• Lead the Export Team and Japan Fresh Export process
• Departmental lead for managing the QA Budget - understand budget/expenses, ordering of supplies for department, etc.
• Maintain the SIP (Salmonella Testing Program) for Beardstown NSIS Plant
• Flexible hours and ability to work different shifts if necessary for plant needs
• Manage and engage employees that report to them as well as others outside the department
• Input and maintain data in Safety Chain Program
Required skills:
• Be able to communicate written and verbally in English
• Be able to work all shifts as needed
• Previous experience with food safety (meat industry) & microbial/chemical testing
• Excel, Word, & Power Point
Education Requirements (if applicable)
• Bachelor degree in microbiology with some chemistry background or 3-5 years experience supervising a food testing lab.
