The City of Saint Paul's Department of Public Works has four vacant Public Works Technician II positions in the Right of Way Maintenance Office, Street Engineering Sidewalks Division, and in the Sewer Division.
These positions perform responsible engineering technician work inspecting, investigating, drafting, administering, and designing Public Works projects. Collects, organizes, and analyzes data. Conducts surveys and writes reports. Operates and maintains land survey instruments. Maintains GIS data base and maps. Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required.
Right of Way Management Office:
This position is required to work 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday and is located at the 899 Dale Street Office.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Reviews, creates, processes, and issues permits for any work within the City of Saint Paul Right of Way
- Answers the permit desk hotline, and greets customers at the Public Works Permit Desk
- Conducts field work inspections
- Works closely and in collaboration with Right of Way field personnel and many other departments within the city and other government entities
The Street Engineering Division has two vacant positions inspecting streets and sidewalks. These positions are required to work Monday through Friday either 7:00 am to 3:30 pm or 6:30 am to 3:00 pm, with occasional overtime and is located at 900 City Hall Annex, 25 West Fourth Street.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Executes and performs inspection work related to Public Works construction projects
- Inspects the day-to-day operations of the contractor and documents the work done by the contractor including excavation, concrete, grading and base, paving, sewer systems, and erosion control in coordination with city, state, and federal specifications
- Reviews construction plans and makes field modifications as needed
- Provides public information and coordinates with businesses, residents, and the public
Sewer Utility Division:
This position is required to work Monday through Friday from 7:00 am to 3:30 pm and is located at 700 City Hall Annex, 25 West Fourth Street.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assists in editing and maintaining GIS data in sewer databases and other sewer records
- Provides technical assistance to property owners, contractors, consultants, and the general public
The eligible list created from this assessment may be used to fill future Public Work Technician II vacancies as they become available in various Public Works divisions such as Street Construction, Street Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Sewer Utility, Bridge Engineering, and/or Field Survey.

Twenty semester credits in courses acceptable toward an undergraduate degree in Civil Engineering as offered by the U of M or equivalent; and two years of experience as a PW Technician I or equivalent.
Additional years of qualifying experience may be substituted for up to ten education credits. One year of experience equals 3 1/3 education credits.

Eligible Lists Created from Open Job Posting: You must receive a score of 75% or higher to pass the assessment and be considered for the position. Non-promotion eligible lists typically are pass/fail and promotion eligible lists are typically ranked. If the open eligible list created contains a veteran, one open list will exist. When there are no veterans remaining on the eligible list (i.e. hired, withdrawn) from an open list that also contains promotional candidates, two lists will be created: one open list and one promotion list. If two lists exist, the promotion list must be exhausted before the open list is considered.
Final Selection Process: Those who pass will be placed on an eligible list for approximately six months and all will be notified of their status. A Hiring Manager will consider those applicants eligible for hire. You will be notified if you are invited to participate in the final selection process which may include an interview, job simulation, work sample submission, or other evaluation method.
