The Public Works Maintenance Technician performs a variety of duties related to Street Maintenance and the Village's Parks System. This is a skilled position that performs an essential service to the residents of the Village of Menomonee Falls.
Under general supervision, the Public Works Maintenance Technician performs a variety of semi-skilled to skilled tasks utilizing hand tools and operates a wide variety of light and heavy-duty vehicles for the construction and maintenance of Village property and infrastructure including parks, right-of-way, buildings, equipment and village property. The position works independently or as a member of a crew and employees are expected to perform routine tasks with minor supervision. The Operations Superintendent and Crew Leaders will provide direction and oversight on special projects and work assignments daily. There is frequent interaction with the general public and other Village departments. The Director of Public Works or designee, reviews and evaluates job performance.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid commercial driver's license (Minimum: Class B) or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Village may provide CDL training assistance as appropriate.
- Experience with the operations of various construction related equipment.
The duties and responsibilities of the position are to perform routine daily operation and maintenance activities for the village's streets, parks and drainage infrastructure and to respond to emergencies as required. The following is a description of some of the specific duties and responsibilities for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive as other duties may be required and assigned:
Streets and Drainage
- Performs manual labor i.e. hand shoveling of snow, sand, asphalt, and other materials on an occasional basis as well as raking and sweeping
- Learn and become proficient in Village procedures for all types of work performed (e.g. asphalt patching and paving, concrete pavement and curb and gutter repairs, snow plowing and removal, yard waste handling, shouldering, ditching, etc.).
- Routine servicing and light maintenance of equipment.
- Gain an understanding of how-to setup and use a transit level for setting grades. Employees shall learn to be able to determine and set grades.
- Operation of the following equipment at a minimum: Lawn Mowers (deck and flail); Tractor with mower/broom attachments; brush cutter; chain saw; plate compactors; brush chipper; cut-off saw; 1-ton pickup truck with a plow; skid steer; articulated tractor with various attachments; tar kettle; crack sealer; asphalt patcher, etc.
- Learn to operate the following equipment: street sweeper, vac truck/jetter, leaf vacuum truck, front end loader to load trucks, compactor, all single/tandem/quad axle dump trucks and other equipment as assigned.
- Employees shall become proficient in winter maintenance: ability to plow with a single/tandem axle plow truck with front and wing mounted plows while operating a spreader and dump body for salt application along with chloride applicator. Respond to snow and ice events within 30 minutes of the call-out.
- Be able to use a front-end loader to properly load a dump truck.
- Ability to operate a quad axle dump truck and use proper unloading and backing techniques.
- Understand the basics of traffic control requirements.
Park Maintenance
- Perform custodial work including cleaning shelters, restrooms, collecting and disposing of refuse, shoveling snow and similar tasks.
- Maintain grass areas in all parks, right-of-way, and other public places, including mowing, trimming, fertilizing, watering and weed control, utilizing all types of mowing and trimming equipment.
- Understand and be able to perform maintenance and repairs to irrigation systems.
- Maintain ball fields and other outdoor play areas.
- Able to work independently on routine tasks.
- Flood, spray, plow and sweep ice rinks.
- Conduct maintenance of park shelter buildings, refuse containers, picnic tables, benches, play equipment, fencing and parking areas.
- Brushing, trimming, planting and care of trees and shrubs.
- Required to work weekend, holiday or evening hours as directed.
- Perform routine daily operation and maintenance activities for the village's parks, landscaping and respond to emergency needs as required.
General Duties
- Assist in maintaining and managing department inventory of supplies, materials, tools, signs, etc.
- Required to work weekends, evening hours, and/or holidays as directed.

- Having the willingness and capability to learn applicable specialized software systems such as GIS.
- Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite programs, and other software commonly used in an office environment is desired.
- Ability to use asset management and workflow software to enter information, evaluate data, establish and close out work orders by using several different electronic devices (desktop, laptop, tablet, phone, etc.).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires a combination of sitting, standing, walking and driving. There will be exposure to heat, cold, wet, and slippery conditions. Frequently subject to work outside of a normal work hour/week schedule as weather or circumstances dictate, e.g. snow storms, rain/wind/ice storms, flooding or other events requiring response to protect the public as a result of natural or man-made circumstances. Typically, these events occur on an un-scheduled basis outside of normal work hours. In addition, there will be exposure to dust, noise and chemicals. Lift frequently 25 to 50 lbs., and must be able to constantly lift 10 to 20 lbs.
