Job description

The City of Fairfield is accepting applications for a Public Works Inspector I/II vacancy within the Public Works Department! The deadline to apply is March 25, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. with interviews tentatively scheduled for the week of April 22, 2024.

The successful Public Works Inspector I/II candidate will inspect public and private improvement projects to ensure compliance with all approved plans, specifications, ordinances, rules, and regulations, enforce applicable safety standards and regulations, and perform soil testing.
This position is represented by Fairfield Employee's Association (FEA) and receives an excellent benefits package, including:

Please note that the posted salary range spans the Public Works Inspector I/II series. Please refer to the specific job descriptions for the individual salary ranges.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Positions include both field and office activities. Field activities may include exposure to dust and noise. The nature of the work requires incumbents to work outdoors in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. Night, weekend or extended hours of work may be involved.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Position requires sitting, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, twisting, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting and crouching. Light to moderate lifting, clear, understandable speech, hearing and vision acuity are also required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Public Works Inspector I is an entry level position in the Public Works Inspector series. The employee in this position performs less difficult inspection work and soils testing which can be learned with experience on the job.
The Public Works Inspector II is the journey level position in this series and performs at a higher level of responsibility.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED / EXERCISED
Both positions receive direct supervision provided by the Public Works Construction Manager.

  • Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in drafting, surveying, algebra, geometry and trigonometry is required.
  • Four (4) years experience in Public Works/maintenance/general engineering is required. Experience with a municipal or county jurisdiction is preferred.
Public Works Inspector II-
  • In addition to the requirements for Public Works Inspector I, one (1) year experience as a Public Works Inspector I with the City of Fairfield or other applicable experience with a private or public agency is required.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATE
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required.Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Assist in review of improvement plans and specifications.
  • Inspect installation of storm drainage systems, sanitary sewer, and water systems for proper grade, alignment and compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Perform current State of California material tests.
  • Maintain accurate as-built drawings for assigned projects; maintain records and submit reports for all assigned projects.
  • Compile information; i.e. daily project logs, track quantities of materials for progress payments to contractors.
  • Make accurate field measurements from contract progress payments and change orders.
  • Inspect construction materials to ensure suitability and compliance with plans and specifications.
Knowledge of:
  • Basic methods, materials, and standards for construction of streets, storm drain, sanitary sewer and water lines, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, parks, landscape and irrigation, and similar public improvements.
  • Accepted construction safety standards and regulations.
  • Basic engineering principles used in engineering drawing and field survey work.
Ability to:
  • Read, evaluate, and interpret construction drawings and reports.
  • Operate a computer; basic use of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Communicate effectively; both orally and in writing.
  • Read, interpret and transfer grades associated with construction from rough grading through completion of project.
  • Prepare reports using written and photo documentation.
  • Analyze and evaluate soil and aggregate conditions.
  • Make accurate field measurements and calculations.
  • Establish and maintain a good working relationship with contractors, suppliers, developers, property owners, and others involved in private and public improvement projects.
