Position Description
DEFINITION:
Sign Language Interpreter is responsible for providing American Sign Language interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in an academic setting.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
  • Receive direction from the Coordinator of Student Accessibility Services
  • Receives direct supervision from Director of Counseling and Student Accessibility Services

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Perform interpreting works utilizing comprehensive or specialized skills with knowledge and practice of interpreter ethics
  • Adhere to the RID code of Professional Conduct and perform in a manner that is professional and appropriate for the class they are interpreting
  • Interpret in a variety of settings as needed including, but not limited to: classrooms, labs, peer conversations, student contributions, films, assemblies, tutor time, study groups, field trips on and off campus
  • Do sign-to-voice interpreting as needed for students and teachers
  • Review course schedules, syllabi, and text books to develop a general understanding of the lecture to be interpreted. Meet with classroom teachers to determine information to be covered, specific vocabulary, and to ascertain information, which may need explanation
  • Maintain a North Carolina Interpreter Transliterator Licensing Board license. Attend workshops and conferences as required by the NCITLB
  • Serves as a liaison to promote positive public relations between Deaf/Hard of Hearing students and their hearing peers and teachers
  • Exhibit an interest for self-improvement in job related skill areas
  • Keeps all assignment related information confidential
  • Attends appropriate student/teacher and student/advisor conferences as requested by supervisor

Other Important Functions:
  • Maintain good standing with applicable licensure board
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Of:
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and a variety of sign systems
  • Knowledge of principles of sound business communication

Ability to:
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Ability to work well with administrative, professional, paraprofessional staff, and students
  • Ability to use sound judgment in assignments to prevent overuse syndrome in interpreters
  • Exercise tact and diplomacy when dealing with complex tasks and situations
  • Work well with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Interpret and apply CFCC goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:
    • Making observations
    • Reading and writing
    • Communicating with others
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following:
    • Standing or sitting for extended periods of time
    • Operating assigned equipment
    • Handling varied tasks simultaneously
    • Bending, stooping, climbing, or lifting up to 50 pounds
  • Maintain mental capacity, which allow the capability of:
    • Making sound decisions
    • Responding to questions
    • Demonstrating intellectual capabilities

  • Qualifications
    EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES
    Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
    Minimum Education/Training:
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent
    • Completion of an Interpreter Training Program (Associate's level) at a regionally accredited college or university
    • Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate National Interpreter Certification through the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf, or other national certification recognized by the NCTILB
    • Possession of a valid North Carolina Interpreter/Transliterator License

    Minimum Experience:
    • Minimum of one year experience in working with students with disabilities in a post-secondary educational setting

    • Candidates who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Master's degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
    • To claim veterans' preference, all eligible persons shall submit a DD Form 214, Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, to Human Resources during the application process. Human Resources will verify eligibility.
