Job Responsibilities
With our Agency's mission to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses, we provide a complete array of medical and support services for children, adults, and families throughout South Carolina.
This position is located at the Department of Mental Health, Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital, 130 SC-252, Anderson, SC 29621.
This is a Temporary Part-Time position providing on-call coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays.
As the Psychiatrist, working under general supervision by the Director of Professional Services, you will provide psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment services for psychiatric patients at Harris Psychiatric Hospital. Performance of duty requires service as on-call psychiatrist for Patrick B. Harris Psychiatric Hospital.
Responsibilities for this Psychiatrist include but are not limited to:
  • Serves as on-call psychiatrist for HPH. Responds to calls from clinical staff regarding patient or other medical concerns. When in house as Officer of the Day/Officer of the Night, makes daily lodge rounds to follow up on established medical or psychiatric concerns or to evaluate new medical or psychiatric concerns about HPH patients.
  • Reviews charts to note medical, nursing and other clinical service entries, vital signs, labs, and other clinical data to formulate assessment and treatment plan for psychiatric and medical problems. Orders medications, labs, referrals, or other tests or treatments. Evaluates patient progress and renders treatment as indicated.
  • When patients require seclusion or restraint, provides orders for the intervention. When in the facility, performs LPP (Licensed Prescribing Practitioner) face to face evaluation. Initiates any needed treatment to minimize the length or frequency of these interventions.
  • Performs LPP admission assessments per HPH/DIS policy on patients newly admitted to HPH.
  • Maintains clinical competency by mastering required in-services or training, including MAPS, CPR, and SCEIS training. Complies with South Carolina Department of Mental Health Compliance Plan and all legal responsibilities and requirements in performing job duties.
  • Participates in debriefings or treatment team meetings.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
Licensed to practice medicine in the State of South Carolina. Completion of full residency (four years), with at least two (2) years of residency in psychiatry.
Preferred Qualifications
Board Certification in psychiatry strongly preferred and required for certified classifications.
Additional Comments
The selected candidate must have thorough knowledge of principles and practice of psychiatry and of consistently excellent patient care. A wide range of clinical and administrative decision-making skills will be utilized in performing these duties. Reviews will be conducted by Medical Records, Peer Review and licensing bodies. Ability and dedication to work with severely and persistently mentally ill population. Ability to perform physical examination skills necessary to provide care to patients.
