This position is responsible for following patient accounts through the entire billing process from eligibility to completion of payment process. Providing medical billing and collection processes by verifying eligibility and benefits, obtaining pre-authorizations, entering medical codes, requesting payments and resolving account issues. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Responsibilities
  1. Oversees patient accounts receivables including student health insurance plan (SHIP) and third-party claims.
  2. Reduces age trial balances by contacting patient for collection or sending secondary claims.
  3. Monitor charges/revenue for accuracy and timeliness.
  4. Must have thorough knowledge of SHIP guidelines and stay up to date with coverage changes.
  5. Maintaining accurate student insurance claims records, submitting them to the carrier, reconciling them with the payment checks from the carriers and investigating any discrepancies, and resubmitting or billing the patient for any unpaid claim(s).
  6. Provides customer service to patients by educating them on insurance policies, billing procedures and coding issues.
  7. May contact patients and insurance companies for payment requests, overdue payments, denied claims and arranges payment plans.
  8. Managing collections to ensure timely notification of delinquencies and pending holds procedures through mailing notifications, and processing unpaid delinquencies to place registration holds when warranted. Will review uncollectible accounts with the Administrative Officer and Associate Director for write-off.
  9. May contact insurance companies for explanation of benefits, pre-authorizations and to resolve claim issues.
  10. Coordinates and resolves denials including the appeals process.
  11. Processes changes in systems to support accurate and efficient billing processes.
  12. Reconcile daily till for deposit.
  13. Checking, as necessary, that providers enter referral forms to the SHIP carrier.
  14. May provide training to others on billing procedures and practices.
  15. Other duties as assigned.
The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of life span growth and development and the ability to assess data regarding the patient's status and provide care as described in the department's policies and procedures manual.

Minimum Qualifications
Three years medical billing experience or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required. Thorough knowledge of entire billing process, demonstrated computer skills, human relations and effective communication skills are also required.
This position is patient-sensitive and must fulfill all associated requirements.
