The Opportunity

The Military Property Apprentice Adjuster completes a multi-month training program with structured learning targets that includes classroom, self-study, and on-the job training elements. The Adjuster will demonstrate acquisition, continued growth, and application of property technical skills via satisfactory claims handling that will increase in complexity as the program progresses. The Military Property Apprentice Adjuster will receive routine evaluations focused on achievement of learning and development combined with the ability to demonstrate associated performance requirements as well as expected to handle claims consistent with their acquired skill level. This program teaches the skills necessary to evaluate, negotiate, analyze, and settle Property Insurance Claims in compliance with all state regulatory requirements. Recognizes and empathizes with members' life events, as appropriate. Candidates who successfully complete this program will be evaluated for placement into a Property Adjuster role.

Work Schedule - Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Training will start on April, 2023 - One week in San Antonio and Two weeks in Dallas, TX

What you'll do:
  • Identifies and manages existing and emerging risks that stem from business activities and the job role.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled.
  • Follows written risk and compliance policies, standards, and procedures for business activities.
  • Provides property claims service through multiple channels (phone, email, etc.) and various methods of inspection (physical, virtual) to members.
  • Adjusts simple to moderate property claims to include writing personal property estimates and evaluating and settling low severity structure claims.
  • Responsible for assigned claims caseload comprised of claims with simple to moderate damages. Updates initial reserve levels dictated by complexity. Leverages digital platform(s) to prepare estimates while utilizing virtual and physical tools for inspections as needed.
  • With supervision, identifies coverage concerns, reviews prior loss history, determines and creates Special Investigation Unit (SIU) referrals when appropriate.
  • Develops proficiencies with estimating adjusting platforms to evaluate and settle property claims.
  • Develops proficiencies at reviewing property claims contracts.
  • With coaching and guidance from team, recognizes and solves obstacles that can occur in the claims process.
  • Acquires foundation knowledge to explain coverage, assist policyholders with information on repairs and describes the settlement process, setting appropriate expectations within all state regulatory requirements.
  • Partners with and/or directs vendors and internal business partners to facilitate claims resolution, including coordinating assignments with Property Direct Repair Program (PDRP) vendors.
  • Supports workload surges and/or Catastrophe operations as needed to include working significant overtime during designated catastrophic events with potential for deployment.
What you Have:
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Current or prior military service with honorable discharge
  • Up to 1 year of customer service experience.
  • Acquisition and maintenance of insurance adjuster license within 90 days and designated number of attempts.

  • Good interpersonal, analytical and negotiation skills
  • Developing knowledge of residential construction
  • Ability to stand for up to 8 hours
Physical Demand Requirements:
  • May require the ability to crouch and stoop to inspect confined spaces, to include attics and go beneath homes into crawl spaces.
  • May need to meet all USAA safe driving requirements including verification of driving record through MVR & possession of valid driver's license.
  • May require the ability to lift a minimum of 35 pounds to include lifting a ladder in and out of the trunk of a car.
  • May require the ability to climb ladders and traverse roofs, this includes the ability to work at heights while inspecting roofs and attics.

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $47,820.00 - $75,240.00

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
