We want to hire a Project Engineer to continue our growth in the Solid Waste and Electric Utility industries in our west suburban Chicago office (Naperville). As a Project Engineer, you will conduct assignments in an office or work-from-home setting, with occasional field work; prepare technical reports and engineering design documents; and, serve as a delegated leader on one or more projects. A Project Engineer exercises independent judgement, leads project tasks, delegates work to junior staff, and completes tasks with little to no direction from the Project Manager.

How you can make an impact
You will help our clients address their environmental challenges, which may include:
  • Permitting, design, and construction
    • Landfill design:
      • Hydrogeology review
      • Grading and site layouts
      • Stormwater modeling
      • Stability evaluations
      • Gas collection design
      • Base liner and final cover containment design
      • Environmental assessments
  • Sustainable materials management
    • Recycling
    • Waste minimization studies
    • Organics management
    • Composting
  • Environmental Assessments
    • Phase 1/Phase 2 Evaluations
    • Miscellaneous Sampling and Reporting

Your project responsibilities will include:
  • Following all SCS health and safety protocols and ensuring team members do the same
  • Collaborating with the Project Manager, Project Director, and the Client to develop project deliverables.
  • Leading applicable permit processing/regulatory agency coordination efforts.
  • Preparing calculations for reports and in support of design documents, including applicable modeling.
  • Reviewing technical documents to ensure completeness and conformance to requirements.
  • Completing quality control reviews on all work products (reports, design plans, design calculations, including applicable modeling, data, HASP, etc.) prior to submission.
  • Coordinating and managing fieldwork and CAD design for multiple projects.
  • Coordinating with contractors, subcontractors, and clients as directed.
  • Communicating with clients for field work coordination, project updates, reporting, design document status, permitting status, and meetings.
  • Preparing budgets and schedules for client projects and manage budgets, invoicing, accounts payable, accounts receivable and scheduling for client projects.
  • Leading, mentoring, and managing junior level staff.
  • Delegating portions of project deliverables to junior staff for completion with Project Manager approval.
  • Serving as a resource for junior staff and assisting staff to resolve project-specific issues.
  • Recording data and/or collecting samples during fieldwork in accordance with standard operating procedures. Data types could include but are not limited to: soil/sediment characteristics, lithology, groundwater or surface water data, photographs, or summaries of visual observations through photograph and written field logs.
  • Conducting and documenting construction quality assurance observations for compliance with construction documents.
  • Preparing proposals and cost estimates.

  • Working safely and supporting/promoting the same from your team members.
  • Helping us grow the number and value of projects we do for existing customers by preparing accurate, quality, and on-time work products.
  • Actively attending conferences, presenting on technical topics, and being involved in professional associations and committees.
  • Taking full ownership of your own success and that of SCS Engineers.

Qualifications
  • Bachelors of Science degree in a related engineering field from an accredited institution.
  • 4+ years of related work experience required. Experience in the consulting industry, including landfill gas management, sustainable materials management, air compliance, and landfill design and permitting, preferred, but not required.
  • P.E. registration or ability to obtain within a year is preferred.
  • Soil mechanics and geotechnical background a plus
  • Soil characterization and groundwater sampling experience a plus
  • Competent using MS Office and other computer software normally used in engineering consulting. Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D design software preferred.
  • Ability to read and understand engineering plans and specifications.
  • Valid driver's license and driving record in good standing required.

Pay range for this position is $60k to $105k depending on experience and location. This does not include bonuses or our Employee Stock Ownership Plan.
