Job Description
Donlin Gold is recruiting a Project Engineer for one of the world’s largest undeveloped gold deposits, owned and operated by Donlin Gold LLC, which is owned equally by affiliates of Barrick Gold and NOVAGOLD Resources. Donlin Gold is designed to be one of just a handful of gold mines worldwide that produce more than one million ounces of gold annually.
POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Project Engineer will provide technical input into several areas of the project design and review. Responsibilities will include both direct engineering work, as well as guiding consultants and team members in various aspects of the project. Work subject matter will include, but not limited to capacity in civil engineering, project management and feasibility, geotechnical (roads, pipelines, facilities, and dam design), and construction planning. The successful candidate will participate in upstream communication of design progress and updates to Donlin management and JV partners.
The work will be primarily based on a 5-day per week work schedule with a variable amount of time on-site at the remote camp operations. Travel as required.
POTENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES (dependent on qualifications):
- Oversee contractor conducting open pit mine design, pit slope design, and schedule optimization
- Oversee field and design efforts including civil and for construction of port, roads, dams, natural gas pipeline, material sites, and mill building foundation
- Participate in water management review studies
- Liaison with all departmental contacts as required to gain input when needed, and effectively communicate the status of project activity routinely through scheduled project reviews
- Manage and oversee contractor work from all aspects including safety, environmental compliance, work quality, cost, etc.
- Conduct periodic inspections of the earthwork activities at camp to perform quality control, identify and rectify any issues that may affect the achievement of scheduled targets with respect to both safety and scheduling
- Provide technical support and advice for contract scope development, tender, and award activities
- Assist in the preparation of designs, plans, drawings, schedules, and other relevant instructions required for the full execution of the project
- Ensure compliance with all project management systems including:
- Document control integrity
- Contractor management
- Scope change control
- Responsible for meeting important deadlines, and institute budget controls
- Communicate and interact with all relevant stakeholders to ensure that outcomes are satisfactorily delivered, and objectives are met
- Comply with safety & health, environmental and Company policies and procedures
- Be part of a growing team, provide additional support and talents as appropriate
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 4-year bachelor’s degree in Mine, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, or related fields required
- 5 years of Mining or Project Management experience required
- Some operating mine experience preferred
- Cold climate experience required; Alaska experience preferred
- Demonstrated Safety Leadership for both self and a team
- Experienced user of project scheduling software (MS Project preferred)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills required
- Excellent computer skills, particularly spreadsheet, word processing, and presentation applications required
