Program Description
Safe Haven Youth Ranch is an Intense Trauma-Informed Residential Program, that offers an unique approach to achieving healing and recovery by combining the use of evidence-based trauma interventions, 4-H youth development programs and individualized behavior skills training as a treatment alternative to youth who have experienced severe adverse childhood traumatic life events of extreme abuse and neglect frequently exacerbated by involvement in the foster care systems.
Population Served
Safe Haven Youth Ranch accepts male youth ages 10-15 with emotional disorders. Most of the youth served at the Ranch are referred after having experienced multiple foster home placements and psychiatric hospital stays that have resulted in the youth feeling rejected and undesirable. At the Ranch, it is our goal to help youth overcome those past experiences by offering a safe, stable, and family farm-like environment for youth to grow, heal and thrive by using a trauma-informed care approach and trauma-specific interventions to address consequences of trauma.
Job Description
Under the direction of the Director of Residential Services, the Residential Program Manager is responsible for managing the day-to-day operation of the residential treatment facilities on campus. Provide direct supervision, guidance, support and training to all Residential Shift Supervisors and Residential Direct-Care Staff, ensuring the highest quality of care is delivered to each youth in care.
Qualifications
- Be at least 21 years of age, physically, mentally, and emotionally capable of performing assigned tasks and have the skills necessary to perform assigned tasks; and
- Minimum requirements: Bachelor's with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a residential setting and have at least 2 year of supervisory experience
- Preferred requirements: Master’s Degree in human services or mental health related field with a minimum of 1-year experience working in a residential setting and have at least 1 year of supervisory experience
- One year of documented full-time work experience in educating and training adults
Responsibilities
The Residential Program Manager will assume the following responsibilities including but, not limited to:
Leadership
- Serves as a positive role model to staff, residents, employees and guests through a positive, caring, and professional attitude
- Must demonstrate tact, initiative, resourcefulness, professional manner, enthusiasm, and non-judgmental attitude
- Interacts and communicates with fellow employees in a manner that promotes a cooperative teamwork environment
- Must have knowledge of the Philosophy, Mission, goals, and objectives of the Safe Haven Youth Ranch; complies with all SHYR policies and procedures
- Must have strong organizational skills and leadership experience
Campus, Facilities and, Vehicles Safety Management
- Ensure each home, vehicles and campus grounds remains in compliance with Residential Child-Care Licensing Minimum Standards and Local State Health Department and Fire Safety Standards at all times
Daily Documentation Management
- Review, comment and approve incident reports related to employees and youth
- Inform the Director of Residential Services of any serious incidents that occur daily
- Conduct staff development training with all residential staff (individually and as a group) as required
- Review Extended Reach database for incident report and emergency behavioral intervention trends and staff report with the Director of Residential Services, Treatment Services Director and the Residential Case Manager to develop strategies to reduce high risk trends
- Meet with all residential staff to discuss reduction strategies of serious incidents and the use of emergency behavioral intervention
Youth Care and Treatment
- Co-facilitate the youth orientation process (including campus tour, safety drills, initial possession searches, and complete related paperwork
- Participate in treatment team meetings on a weekly basis, keep notes and share the treatment team overview notes with Residential Shift Supervisors
- Provides appropriate crisis intervention as necessary by anticipating and responding quickly to escalating behaviors, utilizing de-escalation techniques to diffuse the situation, correctly prioritizing safety concerns, following proper restraint technique guidelines, and displaying neutral emotions
- Uses appropriate counseling skills by de-escalating aggression, using active listening skills, using appropriate tone and volume of voice, providing a high frequency and variety of positive reinforcements, maintaining appropriate boundaries, and promoting a positive peer culture
Staff Development and Training
- Participating with the Director of Residential Services in the interview, selection, and hiring process of residential staff
- Conducting orientation and pre-service training of new residential staff. Including observe, assess, and document assessment of new hires orientation competences
- Assisting the Director of Residential Services in the development and ongoing improvement of the orientation, pre-services curriculum and process
- Providing the Director of Residential Services an overview of the status of residential staff's annual trainings needs, on-going competencies, strengths and weaknesses assessments, and other applicable updates
Staff Management and Support
- Manage all employee related issues in accordance with the SHYR’s Employee Handbook. Possess a complete and working knowledge of all residential staff jobs to be able to help, support, and, encourage staff
- Supervises all residential staff in accordance with SHYR’s policies and applicable laws
- Responsibilities include interviewing and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems
- Responsible for ensuring that all residential staff adhere to the trauma-informed care and youth-guided care model and practices at all times
- Participate in and conduct supervisory meetings with Residential Shift Supervisors and Residential Direct-Care Staff performance reviews
- Responsible for developing and managing the residential staff monthly work schedule to ensure that all shifts are covered and staff are not entering into overtime hours (without written approval from the Director of Residential Services); will be responsible for covering Residential Shift Supervisor shifts when needed
- Must be available to respond to on-call support from the Residential Shift Supervisors when off campus (Weekends/After Hours). This duty is shared with the Director of Residential Services
- Oversee all shifts and assists Residential Shift Supervisors in coordinating the daily milieu activities as scheduled; and makes recommendations for changes or improvements where needed
- Ensures residential staff practice appropriate youth engagement techniques with all youth in care
- Ensures there is a system in place to ensure all residential staff is available to handle emergencies
- Train/Assists all residential staff in maintaining safety and security of the home through close observation and monitoring of the youth’s activity and all home scheduled activity, maintaining optimal physical proximity, remaining alert at all times, and using analytical forethought to anticipate potentially volatile or unsafe situations and proactively intervene

Pay: $50,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
