ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY

Listening House has served St. Paul since 1983, providing hospitality, practical assistance, and

counsel to adults experiencing homelessness, deep poverty, and social isolation.


As a low-barrier, daytime, drop-in referral and resource center, we hold the inherent dignity of all who

enter our space, and welcome guests just the way they are. We fulfill basic needs like hygiene

supplies, bathrooms, and storage of personal belongings, clothes, coffee, mail, birth certificates, social

security cards, state IDs, special guest requests and much more.


We care for our neighbor’s social and emotional needs through our practice of strength based,

individual and harm reducing radical hospitality, welcoming people and listening to them in a

nonjudgmental space. We work closely with partner professionals in mental and chemical health,

housing, basic physical care, employment, housing stabilization, veteran services, public health and

disability services.


MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is a managerial and leadership position to all front-line staff who directly support guests

who come to us to receive our services.

  • Implementation: Responsible for the managerial, administration, and leadership of all program staff conducting the day-to-day operations, tracking, and maintenance of assigned areas where guests receive services for basic needs such as sleep, hygiene, and food. The Program Manager will be expected to innovate current services and initiate new opportunities for staff and guests alike. The Program Manager is expected to work at least 3 of the 4 work days during the hours that staff and guests are in the building. Our current hours are Wednesday – Sunday 12-8:30 PM but subject to change.
  • Stewardship: The point person responsible for fostering a space that reflects the core values of Listening House, ensuring goods and services funded and supported by the community treats guests, and all neighbors with dignity and respect.
  • Relationship Management: Supports staff to communicate their needs and work through conflicts or barriers without creating additional trauma for themselves or others. Builds trust with staff, guests, volunteers and other stakeholders - consistently treating them as equal humans worthy of dignity.
  • Advocacy: Coordinates with extended leadership, management, and specialists to provide seamless, comprehensive guest services. Lead all-staff meetings and provides day to day 1to1 support to primarily staff but also guests in achieving a higher quality of services and programs.
  • Representation: Represents organization to all visitors, guests, and partner organizations internally, while ensuring actions and words reflect Listening House vision and values externally.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE / LIVED EXPERIENCE

This position requires specific skills, knowledge, and/or lived experience to support people who have

complex support needs. To perform duties adequately one will need:

  • Experience working or volunteering directly with people who are unsheltered, living through homelessness, or receiving other Social Services/Government Aid.
  • Proven ability to self-start, be curious, and seek out information.
  • Demonstrated critical thinking and interpersonal skills that can de-escalate when necessary, foster confidence, and build trust. Effective problem-solver.
  • Discernible skill in training, supporting and leading staff who are required to follow multi-step directions.
  • This crucial role ensures that all program services are delivered with Knowledge, experience, and demonstrated ability to align with harm reduction and trauma informed principles.
  • This position also serves as a member of the Senior Leadership team.

  • Ensures quality services for Listening House guests, demonstrating a commitment to excellence both within the organization, and in the community.
  • Provides strategic vision, direction, and insight on future Listening House Initiatives, leading the development and execution of strategic program work.
  • Oversees a comprehensive staff training and development effort that equips all staff with the ability to effectively meet client needs.
  • Support direct reports in determining appropriate relationship interventions and services strategies.
  • Promote and create a diverse, mission-driven environment committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion with respect to race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, nationality, and religion.
  • Creates a positive work environment and demonstrates an understanding of the strengths and challenges of the different service delivery roles.
  • Create and amend policies and procedures for Listening House as requirements, needs and service delivery changes to include needs and trends of our unsheltered guests.
  • Assess, organize, and maintain a process that allows for collecting, tracking and distributing donations to Listening House guests.
  • Manage the access of the donation to support equitable distribution to all guests.
  • Responsible for hiring and supervising all program staff.
  • Advanced knowledge and use Microsoft Office suite, sending and receiving messages in text, and calling people using a telephone.
  • Must believe in the core values of Listening House and be driven by the mission of the organization.
  • Demonstrated aptitude in working with people with complex support needs preferred
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

● Degree in Human Resources/Human Services, Psychology, Sociology or other related degree.

● A minimum of 5 years working in the nonprofit sector in human services, social services, or other comparably related community organization or agency.

● A minimum five years working in a supervisory role.

● Experience with mental health principles, trauma informed practices homelessness issues, and working in intercultural environments is desirable.
