Responsibilities
This position is responsible for directing and overseeing medical/clinical research conducted in healthcare settings by faculty, staff, and researchers. This position proactively expands the research infrastructure across the College of Medicine (CoM) in order to provide students with ongoing opportunities and prepare them to meet short-term and long-term goals.
Advises, supports, tracks, and facilitates medical student research under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs and Medical Student Research (ADGPMSR). Develops and implements programmatic goals and objectives to create new research programs that expand current research opportunities while supporting initiatives set forth by the Assistant Dean. Evaluates and refines current research policies and develops new policies and guidance documents for both faculty and students. Responsible for conducting initial research advising appointments for first- and second-year medical students at the main campus. Provides guidance to students regarding research opportunities, developing relationships with faculty mentors, understanding and interpreting policies and procedures, and research approval processes (to include IRB compliance). Provides training for CoM academic advisors regarding research advising services offered and conducts follow-up advising sessions as needed. Assists students with required trainings to prepare for engagement in research.
Oversees the research notification form (RNF) process used for first and second-year medical students. Provides guidance for form completion and troubleshoots technical issues. Collects, analyzes, and produces reports regarding students' level of participation in research across campuses. Collaborates with technical experts to improve data collection within SharePoint and the RNF, providing reports to stakeholders each semester. Directs the annual summer research fellowship (SRF) program coordinating the review process, setting guidelines, collating and analyzing data, and organizing final review meetings. Processes payments for SRF according to CoM and university policies. Collects and analyzes residency application data for all students for the purpose of reporting out to college leadership, as well as internal and external reviews. Distributes award letters to students tracking their progress. Supports the Assistant Dean in coordinating, planning, evaluation, and implementation of all new student research education initiatives in the CoM. Analyzes and prepares various reports, including those from RNFs and residency application data, to college leadership as well as external accrediting organizations.
Collaborates and communicates directly with research mentors within the College and at institutions affiliated with our regional campus staff and Deans. Maintains a working knowledge of the research expertise for individuals at CoM collaborating with faculty and principal investigators. Builds relationships and assists with the coordination of clinical and translational research projects at FSU. Responsible for assuring that the college maintains a collaborative role with main university as well as clinical partners across the state. Conducts training for CoM academic advisers regarding research advising services offered by the division. Provides faculty with mentorship resources and tools in order to best facilitate student learning.
Responsible for planning, organizing and executing the annual student summer research poster session and student research focused Grand Rounds events for the college. Updates and maintains medical student research website to reflect new policies, guidance documents, or share notable stories regarding student research success. Maintains the local research opportunities database. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and six years of experience related to academic and/or Student Services; or a high school diploma/equivalent and experience equal to ten years. (Note: post-high school education can substitute for experience at the equivalent rate.)
  • Experience with student programs and activities.
  • Experience with the principles and practices of student program planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Experience in the principles and practices of project planning, development, and evaluation.
  • Experience in preparing clear and concise reports, policies, procedures, correspondences, and other written materials.
  • Valid Florida or Georgia Driver's License or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and apply related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to interpret and apply related University policies, procedures, principles, and practices.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications and basic computer functions.
  • Experience in preparing policies.
  • Experience in evaluating process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives.
  • Experience in strategically planning and serving as a catalyst for organizational change, cultivating a shared vision with others, and motivating others to transfer vision into action.
