Job Description

The Legal Aid Society’s Civil Practice is seeking an Administrative Practice Coordinator to join the Immigration Law Unit (ILU). Reporting to the Attorney-in-Charge, the Administrative Practice Coordinator will work with ILU management team, Office Managers and their teams, case handlers, and the Civil Grants & Contracts Team to ensure quality assurance for ILU case matters. This Practice Coordinator will help establish and implement efficient systems for data collection and case management system updates. The Administrative Practice Coordinator will also help screen and coordinate referrals for our non-detained immigration legal services teams.    

 

The ideal candidate will be a talented team player, with exceptional organizational skills and a particular ability to develop efficient systems for data entry. The ideal candidate would also share a deep commitment to public interest practice and maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders in the legal, court, and service communities.

 

The Immigration Law Unit of The Legal Aid Society is a recognized leader in the delivery of legal services to immigrants in all five boroughs of New York City and surrounding counties within the New York District of the USCIS. The Unit provides low-income New Yorkers with the free comprehensive immigration services ranging from deportation defense to adjustment of status to legal permanent residence and citizenship applications. The Unit specializes in the intersection between immigration and criminal law and works collaboratively with all practice areas to serve the society’s diverse immigrant clients through a comprehensive service model. Staff represent immigrants before USCIS, immigration judges in removal proceedings, and the Board of Immigration Appeals, as well as in federal court on habeas corpus petitions, petitions for review, administrative and judicial appeals, and other matters.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure accountability and maintenance of practice standards
  • Work with the ILU management team, Office Managers and their teams, case handlers, and the Civil Grants & Contracts Team to ensure that ILU case matters are timely updated with data required for grants management
  • Coordinate referrals for our non-detained immigration legal services teams, including ActionNYC referrals for our Immigration Opportunities Initiative (IOI) team
  • Maintain strong relationships with IOI subcontractors
  • Develop best practices for referrals to ILU, both coming internally from within LAS and external ones
  • Foster and encourage teamwork and communication
  • Represent the Civil Practice and Legal Aid in the community
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or work experience consistent with the position
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income immigrants is strongly desired
  • Ability to work in a team setting including strong communication and follow-up skills
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to manage relationships and effectively communicate with Office management team; case handlers; and Civil G&C team
  • Highly self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately and quickly gather data, compile information, and keep accurate records
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent computer skills including Office 365 and all Microsoft Office programs, especially Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, etc.), and demonstrated ability to work with databases
  • Excellent judgement, including ability to handle sensitive or confidential information
  • Ability to multitask
  • Proficiency in Spanish preferred

 

SALARY TRANSPARENCY

The posting reflects the range of potential salaries for the role. The specific salary offers will be dependent on candidate qualifications, including collectively bargained salary steps for unionized roles.

 

Salary Range/ Salary:$73,829
