Description
JOB SUMMARY
Using the flux core welding process, this position performs set-up and position welding on a diversified line of standard weldments and structures in accordance with code certifications, alignment, dimensional, and general inspection requirements. These mid-level welders fit and position weldments having a number of parts, use welding fixtures and jigs where applicable, and work from drawings and job layouts. Candidates must have the ability to use a rule, square, templates and gages in addition to a strong knowledge of welding principles and techniques.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate equipment in a safe manner and uses safe work habits.
- Read, understand, and follow job order specifications, blueprints, work instructions and procedures.
- Use a computer to access job information and accurately clock work transactions.
- Prepare all material surfaces to be welded ensuring that there is no loose or thick scale, slag, rust, moisture, grease, or other foreign matter.
- Remove rough spots from work pieces using portable grinders, hand files, or scrapers.
- Clean or degrease parts sing a wire brush, portable grinder or chemical bath.
- Weld steel components with welding equipment as specified by procedures, layouts, blueprints, diagrams, work orders, or oral instructions.
- Weld predominantly in the flat position operating a positioner to progress the weld.
- Monitor the fitting, burning and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion or expansion of material.
- Fill holes, cut, contour, and bevel metal plates and structural shapes to dimensions as specified by blueprints, layouts, work orders and templates.
- Examine work pieces for defects including use of weld gages or tape measures to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Check grooves, angles or gap allowances using micrometers, calipers or other precision measuring equipment.
- Chip or grind off excess weld, slag, or spatter using hand scrapers, portable grinders, or arc-cutting equipment.
- Repair products by dismantling, straightening, reshaping, and reassembling parts as necessary.
- Operate and/or use forklifts, cranes, hoists, slings, grinders, cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, and instruments of measurements.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment including complying with safety procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Willingness to cross train and perform the work of other job tasks when necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Perform work standing on concrete for up to 12 hours per day.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs with regularity and up to 70 lbs occasionally.
- Ability to type on a keyboard and use a mouse to gather and input job information on a computer.

- Exposure to noise, sparks, smoke, fumes, and heat in a production environment.

Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- A high school diploma or GED with a minimum of three years production level welding experience required.
- Additional instruction such as a welding certificate or technical diploma preferred and counted towards years of experience requirements.
- Preference given to candidates with experience operating a positioner and use of Flux Core and MIG weld wire.
- Aptitude to read and interpret blueprints and weld specifications.
- Basic mathematical skills such as addition, subtraction, fractions and decimals.
- Ability to perform precise measurements using a tape measure, square and weld gages.
- Basic computer skills required to accurately gather and input data from computer systems.
- Capability to lift 50 lbs with regularity and up to 70 lbs occasionally.
- Experience with jib cranes and sitting forklifts preferred, but not required.
