POSITION SUMMARY
The Production Technician Lead - Lighting is responsible for the maintenance and operation of lighting consoles, systems and equipment in the Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater, DeVos Family room, and various other spaces throughout the building. The Lead Lighting Tech manages the lighting console and equipment for live events (i.e. theatrical shows, musical performances, meetings and special event rentals). The Production Technician Lead - is an integral member of the Production department and assists in maintaining the technical aspects of the facility as well as supervising the Event Crew in general setup and teardown of events, load-in and running of technical elements of shows and other tasks as assigned.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS/RESPONSIBILITIES
•Set up and run lights for various live productions (i.e. theatrical shows, musical performances, meetings and special event rentals) in the Alexis & Jim Pugh theater, DeVos Family room, and various other spaces throughout the building. Work tech rehearsals to fine-tune lighting needs for client satisfaction. Partner with 3rd party vendors for special equipment needs. Remain onsite during assigned shows/events. Quickly assess and troubleshoot any technical issues to ensure a smooth and successful event.
•On-site point of contact for assigned clients/production groups. Attend and participate in assigned advance calls for upcoming shows and events. Gather required information to ensure appropriate technical needs for a smooth and successful show/event.
•Act as shift lead. Lead crew in event and show preparation, setup and tear down including loading and unloading tables, chairs, lights, audio, stages and other equipment as needed in a safe and efficient manner. Participate in the training and supervision of event crew.
•Return all event and show items to their proper locations in clean and working condition. Responsible for the inventory, safety and security of AV, Sound, Lighting & Staging equipment. Report all facility or equipment problems/malfunctions to the proper party. Schedule repair of equipment as requested.
•Perform routine maintenance on lighting equipment to ensure equipment is operating properly. Notify manager of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed. Research and explore new technologies to support operational and client needs.
•Attend all training sessions and department meetings as required.
•Follow and support all operational policies and procedures. Assimilate into the arts center culture through understanding, supporting and demonstrating the core values.
•Able to remain calm under pressure. Ability to deal effectively with internal and external customers, some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact and diplomacy. Maintain a level of professionalism and cooperation with clients, 3rd party vendors and colleagues at all times.
•Adhere to all company safety and security policies and procedures. Responsible for maintaining a safe work environment. Follow all OSHA guidelines.
•Other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
•Demonstrated knowledge of theater assets, AV equipment and stage sets.
•Ability to follow verbal directions, printed diagrams and layouts as assigned by Production management with minimal supervision when setting up spaces. Able to effectively communicate in English in both written and verbal forms.
•Detail oriented, good follow-through, and effective communication skills. Ability to quickly assess a situation and take action to promptly resolve any concerns or technical challenges.
•Minimum 2 years of experience in Lighting and proficient with the following:
- ETC EOS console series/networks (or equivalent programming)
- Strong programming skills
- Conventional/Moving/LED light fixtures
- Ability to hang/focus lighting instruments of various types, and to read and understand lighting plots
- instrument repair and maintenance
- Patching ETC dimmers; connecting to company switches
- Troubleshooting signal and power issues
Preferred qualifications include:
•Strong design skills/artistic eye
•Setting up and leading large stage installations from concept
•Experience working with VectorWorks, AutoCAD, Lightwright
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
•This position requires the ability to work a variable schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays to meet operational needs.
•Able to load & unload various equipment carts, i.e. tables, chairs, road cases, etc. on a frequent basis.
