Job Description
Harrison Gray Search has partnered with a longstanding, family-owned food manufacturer in Grand Rapids to help them find a Production Supervisor.
The ideal candidate is someone who has 3-5 years experience, is bilingual, enjoys working in food manufacturing, and is willing to join a company long-term.
Role/Shift: The role is a first shift (5a-4:30p) Monday through Thursday position.
This position will report to the VP of Operations and will carry out these supervisory responsibilities:
JOB FUNCTIONS
Supervise Full Time and Seasonal Staff assigned to Production
- Assign staff to product lines and rotation schedules
- Provide data for hire/fire/promotional decisions; Make recommendations to VP of Operations
- Address performance issues that occur on the floor; Communicate issues and concerns to the VP of Operations
- Oversee the training of seasonal employees
- Communicate the needs of production employees to Management and HR; Communicate company needs/policies to production employees
Supervise set-up and operation of all the equipment on the floor for all positions and product lines; including equipment on the various lines and Low Volume Work Cells
- Direct setup and operation of equipment; Adjust as necessary; Direct changeovers
- Define detail and direct setup for Low Volume Work Cells and special orders
- Troubleshoot equipment; Report problems and concerns; Make recommendations on changes, repairs, and replacements
- Tear down and inspect the equipment
- Engage in systems thinking with equipment; Understand cause and effect and problem-solve accordingly for increases in productivity
Assist with managing the daily, weekly, and annual production schedule for product lines in coordination with a Master Schedule
- Assist in determining production schedules for the various production lines.
- Communicate the availability of people and equipment to the Materials Manager
- Adjust schedules as needed to accommodate variations in product needs, urgency, production time available, personnel available, equipment problems, etc.
- Provide recommendations and changes to the Master Schedule to gain efficiency in long-term production planning.Work closely with the Materials Manager on production forecast scheduling.
- Calculate requirements of components for phases of production based on end-product needs
Supervise established Employee Safety Program
- Understand roles and responsibilities in safety programs, including hazard communication, forklift operation, lockout tag out, fire safety, safe lifting, and general housekeeping.
- Lead the troubleshooting of injuries and emergencies; Report accidents and injuries; Work with Human Resources on injury follow-up and work restrictions.
- Lead the Safety Team.Schedule regular meetings, prepare agendas and record notes.
- Maintain and enforce safety standards; Report suggestions, hazards, and violations to the VP of Operations
- CPR/First Aid/AED/Bloodborne Pathogen certified.Work together with Human Resources to schedule training for relevant employees and annual renewal of certifications.
Coordinate Packaging and Formulation Changes
- Participate in Product Development Process
- Assist in updating work instructions/labels to reflect changes
- Communicate changes to team members; Coordinate implementation of changes on the floor
Coordinate Floor Activities
- Held accountable by VP of Operations for completing orders on time
- Ensure ingredients and materials are available to accomplish the production schedule
- Troubleshoot problems; Make sure that production is running smoothly
- Assign special orders; Verify orders are correct
- Make recommendations and implement changes to workstations layout and design
Comply with and Maintain Established Quality Guidelines
- Understand assigned quality checks on finished products; Ensure checks are conducted and accurate.Determine unnecessary checks and eliminate.
- Understand all ingredient, product/formulation and packaging quality standards and incorporate them into corresponding work processes for Line Operator, Equipment Operator and Cook position
- Answer questions; Seek clarification if necessary.Suggest & implement ways to make quality checks easier, more visual, faster & more trainable.
- Train Full Time employees on duties, methods and responsibilities; Train seasonal employees on specific functional positions
- Enforce guidelines; Report suggestions, hazards and violations to VP of Operations
Enforce established Food Safety and Sanitation Rules
- Enforce department GMPs (Good Manufacturing Practices).Participate in weekly GMP walkarounds
- Ensure daily/weekly/monthly/annual cleaning activities are performed and performed
correctly
- Report suggestions, hazards, and violations to the department supervisor
- Maintain allergen standards; Understand when a cleaning should occur and coordinate clean-out activities
- Maintain a high level of personal cleanliness and hygiene
Assist in-house label creation
- Keep label template as an independent entity separate from the current database format.
- Generate labels; verify accuracy
- Keep labels categorized
Other Supervisory & Support Functions
- Supervisor is designated as the go-to supervisor for Production and Operations issues.
- Supervisor provides support to each other while complying, maintaining, and following established policies and procedures.
