Job description

Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Production Editorial Manager in its Books Division who will be responsible for supervising staff and managing content operations including the project management, editing quality, and content creation of print and electronic books and related ancillaries. The Production Editorial Manager will join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute. This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in the selection and development of innovative ideas and scholarship, the creation of pioneering technologies to enhance discovery and learning, and the connection of people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.
The Production Editorial Manager leads a team of production editors and works closely with internal colleagues in acquisitions, design, marketing, and production and external service providers (contractors, freelancers, and vendors) to manage the budgets, schedules, content quality, and distribution of work assignments for digital and print book publications. The Press publishes between 120 and 150 titles annually, along with more than 200 reprints per year. The Production Editorial Manager serves as part of the Books Division's management team and works cross-departmentally to decide on strategies for books and other publishing projects, resolve issues, and manage staff and supplier performance, development, and training or onboarding. The Production Editorial Manager in the Books Division also collaborates with leaders across Hopkins Press to develop strategies, policies, and practices for accessibility and digital workflow initiatives in the publication of print products, e-books, open access content, and online reference works, taking the lead on projects as they arise. This position reports to the Director of Publishing Operations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Head Publishing Operations Production Editorial team in the management of the book publishing lifecycle from manuscript through to publication including coordinating deliverables across the Press, communicating program status to internal and external stakeholders, and escalating concerns and issues to the Director of Publishing Operations and other department heads.
  • Direct the work of internal and external production editors, copy editors, indexers, etc. monitoring the assignment of projects, managing author and stakeholder expectations, and guiding colleagues and direct reports as needed to ensure that editorial quality and project management effectiveness meet Press standards.
  • In close collaboration with acquisitions, design, marketing, and production colleagues, develop efficient workflows and continuous process improvement strategies, incorporate technological capabilities related to content responsibilities, and lead change management including preparing team members for important changes, implementing those changes, and creating an inclusive learning environment.
  • Establish and update the style guidelines and operating procedures to ensure the appropriate level of content quality, publishing consistency, and achievement in the successful completion of work to agreed cost, quality, and timing expectations.
  • Collaborate cross-departmentally to decide on the selection of and strategy for publishing projects, keeping the Books Division apprised of title requirements and statuses, efficiently and cost-effectively resolving issues, mitigating risks to the Press's goals and program, and exploring opportunities to advance the Press's mission.
  • Evaluate external service offerings and onboard service providers (contractors, freelancers, and vendors).
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and direct the work of staff, casual workers, students, and interns.
  • Act in production editor capacity for special projects and assigned portion of the title list.
  • Weave diversity, equity, inclusion, and access principles into all aspects of the work including working closely with publishing colleagues and the Director of People, Culture & Equity on DEIA initiatives (e.g., diversity of voices in editorial freelancers, inclusive language review of house style).

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of editorial, design, and production processes with direct copyediting and proofreading experience, including proficiency with the Chicago Manual of Style and the ability to apply other style manuals.
  • Advanced Microsoft Word skills, and proficiency in full suite of Microsoft Office applications and Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Familiarity with digital publishing and print manufacturing formats and standards.
  • Familiarity with the publishing industry's accessibility standards, metadata management, and XML workflows.
  • Understanding of asset management systems, title databases, and file management best practices.
  • Must be able to prioritize multiple tasks in tandem, while working with a variety of people (e.g., direct reports, peers, senior staff, and external service providers and suppliers).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, form collaborative teams, and instill passion and drive in those teams.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Superior problem-solving skills including using analytics to drive decisions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Ten years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five plus years of publishing industry experience, preferably in a scholarly or academic publishing setting.
  • Three plus years of progressively increasing management experience including providing guidance and opportunities to direct reports for development and advancement.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
