Macmillan is seeking a creative and highly organized Production Designer to join the Diversified Sales Team! This newly created position will be an extremely collaborative role, working closely with several different divisions and outside vendors. Reporting to the Associate Director, Diversified Sales, the ideal candidate has a passion for books, experience managing production design for high-end, custom books, and always strives to always be learning, creating and working on something new.
This position is based in New York, but remote candidates will be considered as well.
Production Designer
- Build, maintain, and release design print-ready files for pre-press from designers/artists
- Reviewing initial layouts and specs with the editor, production manager, and designer to address technical queries and design-related concerns, to ensure files are set up to the printer's specifications prior to delivery
- Leads the design and mock up efforts, keeping the internal team appraised of their development
- Initiate and organize design reviews as often as needed and routes work through the established workflow for approvals from all stakeholders
- Design marketing pieces, display banners utilizing our brand guidelines
- Execute changes to type and layout, as well as place and style copy to spec or as otherwise directed
What you'll do:
- Brainstorm, plan, and collaborate with all stakeholders on decisions related to the look and feel of a product (e.g. illustration style, typography choices, layout, covers, icons, infographics, etc.)
- Maintain integrity of project files until they are archived
- Assume primary responsibility for all design interface with sales, production and publisher teams
- Working with designers and editors to troubleshoot and resolve technical design and production issues
- Commissioning and supervising freelance design assistance for editors as needed
- Make design corrections, mockups, or typesetting changes, if needed
What you'll bring:
- Proficient in creating, correcting, preflighting and exporting files in Adobe Creative Suite: Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign and Acrobat Pro DC
- Excellent communication skills and an ability to interact effectively and efficiently with vendors and across internal teams
- Adhere to established style guidelines
- Detail-oriented, with the ability to meet deadlines
- Strong organizational, problem-solving and prioritization skills
- Experience with publishing software such as Adobe InDesign and InCopy
- Knowledge of digital formats such as HTML and ePub is a plus; familiar with the Apple OSX operating system
Ideal experience:
- 2+ years of production design in trade publishing
- College graduates preferred
This role will have an annual salary of $55,000-$70,000.
