Job description

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for an Associate Director, Exhibition Design and Production (ED&P). Reporting to the Director of ED&P, the Associate Director oversees the production branch of the department, establishing strategies, systems, and procedures to integrate and optimize multiple production workflows within the Museum, and manages the department's Production Managers and Building Shops.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manages the Production Managers and Assistant Production Managers identifying and assigning support to realize the exhibition program.
  • Manages the Carpentry, Lighting, Paint, and Frame Shop through multiple workflows to produce the exhibition program and additional Museum building projects.
  • Participates in recruitment for select open positions and makes hiring recommendations or decisions for staff vacancies; supervises assigned staff on daily basis, providing relevant training, feedback, guidance, professional development, etc.; ensures compliance with and comprehension of Museum policies and relevant collective bargaining agreements; manages the constructive discipline process, as warranted; conducts annual performance reviews with direct staff; etc.
  • Coordinates overall production across several departments - Audio Visual, Graphic Design, Conservation, Building Operations, Performance and Live Programs, and Learning and Engagement.
  • Assists the Director in defining organizational goals and strategic plans.
  • Makes, executes and exercises independent judgment about department management policies as it pertains to exhibition production.
  • Manages department finances and the annual Exhibition Design and Production budget in collaboration with the department Director.
  • Converts the strategic exhibition calendar to the annual production schedule.
  • Provides high-level planning and project management of complex exhibition projects.
  • Leads feasibility studies for new acquisitions.
  • Leads the department's use of 3D rendering tools; develops and maintains an inventory of base models (virtual and physical).
  • Maintains database of AutoCAD base drawings.
  • Oversees the overall annual production timeline and tracks the progress of individual exhibition projects.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree, in art or a design-related field, preferred, and ten or more years of progressively responsible relevant work experience, including experience managing teams.
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to efficiently manage several projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to form and maintain successful working relationships with museum staff, designers and artists.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino, Photoshop, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), and other standard office procedures and equipment.
  • Knowledge of 20th- and 21st-century art is preferred.
  • MoMA participates in the TSA’s Certified Cargo Screening Facility Program. If hired, individual must successfully complete a security threat assessment through the Department of Homeland Security in order to participate.

Salary range: Minimum of $130,000 to maximum of $140,000 per annum
