Job description

Metalenz is at the forefront of driving innovation in optics with metasurface technology, providing solutions that redefine the possibilities of mobile imaging and sensing. Metalenz is the first company to bring metasurfaces to mass markets, with millions of its meta-optics already integrated in consumer devices, combining the functionality of three or four complex lenses and components into a single flat device, mass-produced in existing semiconductor foundries.
The Company's latest product, Polar ID, is a groundbreaking imaging sensor solution that can see what no other sensor can see, enabling secure and affordable face unlock for all smartphones. This system-level solution harnesses the unique capabilities of metasurface optics together with machine vision algorithms to bring a new form of sensing to mobile devices for the first time.
Metalenz is built on foundational research from Harvard University, and backed by venture arms of Intel, 3M, TDK, and others.
The Position
Metalenz is seeking a Senior Fabrication Engineer to lead prototyping activities for our metasurface-based optical components and devices. This position is a hands-on role in the wafer fab, building devices for internal and external customers. You will work closely with a small team of process engineers, and also collaborate closely with our design and metrology groups.
What you'll do

  • Build metasurface wafers to support Metalenz's Orion and PolarID sensing products.
  • Work in a shared-user clean-room using microelectronic fabrication techniques.
  • Use direct-write electron beam lithography to fabrication nanostructures.
  • Develop materials and processes for prototyping sub-micron semiconductor optical devices.
  • Operate optical aligners and e-beam exposure tools.
  • Provide SEM characterization data for device yield improvement.
  • Own project planning, schedules, prototyping and customer deliverables on aggressive timelines.
  • Have the opportunity to learn the full suite of process and metrology tools.
  • Collaborate closely with Metalenz design and metrology teams on new designs and products.
  • Work in cleanroom fabrication for about 75% of work day. Remainder attending meetings with colleagues from Metalenz design and metrology teams, planning experiments and equipment reservations, etc.

About You
  • PhD with 3+ years of experience post-graduation or MS with 8+ years of experience post-graduation in appropriate engineering discipline (electrical, chemical, materials engineering, physics, etc).
  • Direct hands-on experience in:
    • semiconductor wafer processing.
    • electron beam lithography (EBL) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
    • photolithography, resist coating, developing, inspection
    • chemical vapor deposition (CVD),
    • reactive ion etching (RIE),
    • optical ellipsometry
  • Substantial hands-on experience in semiconductor wafer processing.
  • Substantial experience with wafer fabrication tools and techniques.
  • Experience in statistical analysis of raw data using commercial packages such as JMP or SAS.
  • Able to design experiments and draw conclusions.
  • Anticipates and resolves problems independently.

What We Offer
  • We provide competitive compensation
  • Pre-IPO stock options
  • 100%, company paid premiums for employees and their dependents, such as medical, dental, and vision
