Job Summary:

The Materials and Processes Engineering Process Chemistry group is seeking a knowledgeable and highly motivated Process Chemistry Engineer.  The engineer will work in a team environment and be responsible for developing, improving, and troubleshooting chemical processes such as priming, painting, electroplating, cleaning, etching, stripping, anodizing, and corrosion resistant coatings on various aerospace alloys.

A fundamental understanding of alloy surface engineering is required. The work scope includes working in a laboratory, and as required the supply base, touching all aspects of the product life-cycle from technology and product development to manufacturing and repair / aftermarket support.  Understanding and controlling these processes and developing new ones are critical to the success of P&W’s engine products.  Candidate should be familiar with working protocols in a chemical laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Understanding and related experience with electrochemical corrosion protection coatings, such as: electroplating, anodizing, electroless plating, CVD, PVD, paints, and other corrosion resistant coatings. Ability to develop new novel coatings.

  • Prior experience with chemical processing of aerospace alloys and developing / qualifying new chemical processes.

  • Ability to work on long-term and short-term projects simultaneously, proven multi-tasking ability.

  • Experience in lab testing, characterization, and data analysis of chemical coating processes.

  • Ability to write detailed lab reports.

  • Practical laboratory experience in the following: characterization/metallography (sectioning, mounting, polishing, microscopy), wet chemistry, and optical microscopy.

  • Ability to analyze possible solutions and make recommendations for process improvement and extract information from existing databases or literature to perform reviews.

  • Interact with Air Force Research Lab (AFRL), Department of Defense (DOD), Department of Energy (DOE) and NASA customers & technical community to seek, secure and execute contracts as related to chemical processing and new novel coatings (external funding)

  • Travel: 10%

Basic Qualifications:

  • BS in chemical engineering, electro-chemical engineering, or chemistry with 5+ years of relevant experience OR

  • Advanced degree in chemical engineering, electro-chemical engineering, or chemistry with 3+ years of relevant experience

  • U.S. Person or eligible to obtain necessary export authorizations required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3+ years experience in an engineering environment with knowledge of P&W specifications and SPOPs (Service Process Operation Procedures) orSAE AMS (Society of Automotive Engineers Aerospace Material Specifications) surface treatment specifications is desired.

  • Strong problem solving, analytical, observational, and organizational skills. 

  • Strong verbal and written communicator with good customer skills including good technical writing skills in the form of reports and documents.

  • Function effectively in a lab environment with people of a broad variety of skills and backgrounds with hands on experience. 

  • Must be able to balance several assignments at once and be proactive and inclusive in problem solving.

The salary range for this role is 77,000 USD - 163,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.
