Are you passionate about making a positive impact in your community? Do you thrive in dynamic and demanding situations? If so, we have an exciting opportunity for you to become a Certified Probation/Parole Officer in our High Risk Unit at the Iowa Department of Corrections.
As a Certified Probation/Parole Officer in our High Risk Unit, you will be a law enforcement Peace Officer working with our highest risk clients. You will play an essential role in eliciting and supporting pro-social behaviors, with a focus on programming that fosters personal growth and reduces the risk of reoffending.
We value initiative and independent judgment, and you will be part of a cohesive multidisciplinary team, working collaboratively to observe and assess client behaviors and interactions. Your exceptional communication skills and ability to build quality relationships with clients will be essential in driving positive change.
Your responsibilities will encompass a diverse range of tasks, such as assessment of risk and incorporating assessments into case management practices. Employees will conduct field checks to ensure compliance with Probation/Parole conditions, as well as compliance with local, state and federal laws, which may include investigations, criminal charges, and arrests. You'll be trained to employ effective behavior change techniques, such as motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioral strategies, to facilitate lasting transformation. Your dedication to clients extends to cognitive-based group facilitation that aides clients in achieving their goals. This considers individual needs, disabilities, trauma, and cultural responsiveness.

Must be Iowa Law Enforcement Certified (in good standing) or have the ability to attain and maintain certification. Iowa Administrative Code 501 specifically identifies the Minimum Standards for Iowa Law Enforcement Officers. Must be able to attain and maintain state firearms certification. Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid driver's license.
Hours: Variable, non-fixed work schedule, 50% (+) of hours to be worked outside of normal business (M-F 8:00-16:30); minimum 2 weekend shifts per month (Saturday or Sunday). 4/10 or 5/8hour shifts to be determined by the HRU Supervisor and Officer.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field, and experience equal to three years of full-time work in a human services or criminal justice field.
  2. A total of seven years of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  3. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes thirty months of full-time work as a Probation/Parole Officer 2.
