We are currently hiring a Principal Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist to support the Medtronic Energy Component Center (MECC) manufacturing site, based in Brooklyn Center, MN.  This is an onsite position and does not require travel. In this exciting role as Principal EHS Specialist, you will be responsible for development and implementation of Health and Safety (HS) policies, programs, and systems to comply with Federal, State, and local EHS regulations as well as Company policies, strategies, initiatives, and goals.

A Day in the Life

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned. Develops, administers and implements environmental, health, and safety programs in accordance with governmental requirements.

  • Major areas of emphasis include Ergonomics, Early Intervention, Incident Investigation, Injury Case Management, Industrial Hygiene (e.g. Chemical, Noise exposure and controls) and some Safety programs (e.g. PPE assessment, Job Hazard Analyses etc.).
  • Ability to make decisions and work independently with some supervision.
  • Ability to connect and build relationships with fast paced frontline production team and leadership in a complex manufacturing environment, drive proactive health and safety systems, be comfortable spending time on the production floor and be proficient with EHS data analyses and software systems, EHS project and program development and sustenance.
  • Proven technical, problem solving, and project management skills.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and daily responsibilities
  • Excellent communication and training skills required.
  • Self-motivation with ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines and multiple requests.
  • Develop and sustain ergonomics program, workers comp coordination with 3rd party.
  • Uses judgment in data analysis to develop and design solutions to resolve complex HS issues.
  • Support teams in identifying and taking corrective action against activities that pose potential threats to workers' health or safety, which may include recommending measures to protect workers' safety through revised methods, processes, or materials; inspecting workplace environments, equipment, and/or practices to ensure compliance with standards and regulations; and investigating and/or identifying causes regarding filed incidents.
  • Develop EH&S reports, presentations and communications for leadership.
  • This position is self-directed and may provide work direction to others in support of day-to-day activities and requires excellent communication skills.
  • Applies mastery of in-depth knowledge of professional Health and Safety principles, theories and concepts and uses independent judgment to develop and design practical solutions to complex EHS issues.
  • Maintain and update OSHA logs, perform data analyses of EHS information system for leading and lagging indicators.
  • Coordinate medical exams, respiratory exams, laser eye exams, wellness checks etc.
  • Oversee IH sampling, ventilation surveys, employee notifications of results and follow-through of actions that arise.
  • Perform PPE assessment, assist with select safety projects as need arises (e.g. cuts and lacerations, slip trip fall).
  • Conduct risk assessments for new equipment, new procedures or operations, facility renovation projects, and research protocols.
  • Help develop, administer, and implement health, and safety programs in accordance with governmental requirements.
  • Review and analyze safety and wellness documentation issued by regulatory agencies; collaborate with regulatory agencies to determine corrective action plans.
  • Evaluate proposed regulations to determine financial, industrial, and public impact.
  • Manage/Deliver projects as assigned and work with stakeholders to achieve desired results.
  • Assist with employee engagement/wellness event.
  • Provide or facilitate employee training and awareness on matters of health, and safety.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelors degree required in a science technical field, including but not limited to: Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Medicine, Engineering, Safety, Chemistry, Biology
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant EHS experience within manufacturing, or advanced degree with a minimum of 5 years relevant Healthy and Safety Governmental Compliance experience within a manufacturing setting

Nice to Have
  • Experience with Ergonomics, IH Programs and passion to grow in this area
  • Experience in worker's compensation
  • Environmental Health and Safety experience within the medical device/healthcare industry 
  • Professional certification or certification eligible (e.g. LPN/RN, CIH, CSP, CHMM ,ATC, LAT, certified ergonomist,).
  • Experience with EHS management systems and risk assessment.
  • Experience with ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and lasers
  • Laboratory safety and chemical hygiene knowledge and experience.

The provided base salary range is used nationally (except in certain CA locations). The rate offered is compliant with federal/local regulations and may vary by experience, certification/education, market conditions, location, etc.
