Job description

Role Overview
KPFF is seeking a dedicated and experienced Team Leader for our Prime Design Group in Northern California. Our Prime Design Group specializes in managing multi-disciplinary projects for public agencies, transportation authorities, and industrial/manufacturing clients. Our projects encompass a diverse range, including new ground-up buildings, equipment renovations, campus master plans, and tenant improvements.
As the Prime Designer for our clients, we are responsible for coordinating internal teams, including civil and structural engineers, and external design sub-consultants throughout the entire planning and permitting process. This role includes scoping projects, coordinating design teams, reviewing drawings and specifications, developing schedules and cost estimates, ensuring quality assurance, and serving as the primary liaison between clients, regulatory agencies, and other design professionals. We oversee projects from initial planning to closeout, managing all stages of development, including entitlements and construction.
In our Roseville office, we currently have a dedicated team of four professionals who are fully engaged in delivering engineer-led design services. We are actively seeking another leader to join this team and contribute to our growing portfolio.
We are open to qualified project managers to work in either our San Francisco or Sacramento offices for this position. Depending on the candidate's qualifications and interests, we are also considering the possibility of establishing another office in the region. We plan to provide comprehensive training, with the aim of developing this individual into the leader of our local Prime Design Group based in the Roseville office. Furthermore, we envision the department's expansion not only in Roseville but also across the broader Bay Area.
Responsibilities
The ideal candidate has a background in structural or civil engineering, showcasing a strong enthusiasm for project management or a desire to transition in that direction. You will focus on the broader aspects of project oversight and foster enduring connections with long-term clients, agencies, contractors, and diverse design consultants. If you are experiencing those moments in design team meetings where you patiently await structural discussions and consistently find yourself intrigued by devising solutions to challenges encountered by fellow consultants, this opportunity could be the perfect fit for your career aspirations.
  • Engage in conventional project management, overseeing the feasibility of concepts and timely coordination of construction drawings.
  • Efficiently manage the consultant team to ensure smooth progress of projects.
  • Understand various disciplines including structures, architecture, electrical systems, plumbing, HVAC, geotechnical aspects, fire protection, civil engineering, surveying, landscaping, entitlement processes, and environmental permitting.
  • Handle unforeseen challenges in a dynamic environment, requiring quick problem-solving abilities.
  • Respond promptly to queries from owners, agencies, or contractors, adapting to new challenges as they arise.
  • Work as part of a team of Prime Consultants known for their agility in addressing issues and maintaining project progression.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture/Engineering, or a related field.
  • If an engineer, a PE or SE license in the state of California.
  • A minimum of 10 years of overall experience, with at least 3 years in the role of managing/leading a team or professionals or project manager on similar-scale projects.
  • General knowledge of how projects are completed, including project development, conceptual design, consulting services procurement, entitlement processes, document review, and construction administration.
  • Strong communication skills to simplify complex technical information for non-technical stakeholders and to articulate complex scenarios accurately.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to keep the design team focused on crucial next actions through technical know-how and soft skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Bluebeam, MS Project, AutoCAD, or Revit.
  • A strong familiarity with quality control and quality assurance processes, with the ability to perform integrated design reviews for complex projects.
  • Curiosity and determination to solve problems and tackle new challenges, with a technical mindset for diving into details when necessary while grasping overall priorities.
